Can people accept Australia's reign?

But the question is, how wide is that daylight?

We know about the batting reserves, where theoretically there's not going to be too large a drop from one of the senior players missig out, but what about the bowling?

When McGrath and Warne are missing (and it won't be long before one or other retires), that attack has a huge hole, and both England and India have shown that in Australia.

I guess we won't really know until it happens. Both McGrath and Warne were relatively obscure selections when they first came onto the Test scene... I personally think it's harder to pick champion bowlers than it is to pick champion batsmen. You don really know for sure until they get a run.

In terms of bowling depth, there is certainly more than there was a year or two ago, which is a promising sign.

Australia played in the WC without these two bowlers.

The selectors chose the wrong players when McGrath & Warne were out. Fair enough MacGill was a replacement for Warne, but he was outclassed by the Indian batsman, as has Warne. But when McGrath was out they went for nuffies like Williams & Bracken, while Kasprowicz was storming through the domestic season. Now his in, even though he's in top form he still has to challenge for a place in the side.

Like who?

Warne/McGrath are leagues ahead of them. When they go, Australia will fall.

Edit: I am talking about the Test side, not the ODI side.

Kasper should have been in the side a good deal longer ago...Lee shouldn't have been playing instead of him...however I don't think Australia will collapse bowling wise; only in the spin department. Nobody will be like Warne for a looooong time. (And I mean in terms of bowling ability)

I agree that we are better off in the bowling back up then two years ago...Cam White is shining, along with assorted youngsters like Tait and Cleary. Remember Lee is young and Gillespie isn't exactly covered in wrinkles;)

Lee has been playing Test cricket for 4 or 5 years. And he has got progressively worse.

Cameron White, Tait and Cleary...if they are the future of our bowling attack, then I do not have much hope.

and the forums that just assume tendulkar and lara are the world's best batsman in recent times without even taking into account names like Waugh, Hayden and Ponting aren't just arrogance?

it's not arrogance I'm merely asking a quesiton

IMO any champion / dominant team / individual is entitled to a bit of swagger / arrogance - call it what you like.............if you are the current best and can back up your "attitude" with the results then so be it - so long as it does not degenerate into "ignorance".........no one can tell me the great WIN sides did not possess a certain amount of "arrogance"..........

on a footballing parallel ManU had it as does Arsenal now...........same for Juve, Real & Brazil...............

so far as the future of AUS cricket goes I believe we have already begun to see some changes pointing towards the bowling future without the likes of Warne & McGrath..............

from memory as this team were building towards their current level they had several part time bowling options such as the Waugh twins, Ponting & even Martyn.........once established they have had the luxury of being able to rely on a 4 man specialist bowling attack - only rarely calling upon their part timers or even a 5th specialist......

recently we have seen Lehmann & Katich being used on a regular basis while Warne / McGrath have been out...........IMO this will continue to be the case that they go to their part time options more often, if this fails to maintain their dominance then they may need to entertain the idea of a 5th bowler / allrounder option to cover any shortfall in class if they loose McGrath / Warne too soon to each other................any long term replacement will need at least a season under their belt b4 any verdict can be given - see Harmison....................

IMO there are still plenty of tactical & selection options available b4 anyone can talk about AUS coming back to the pack at anytime in the future.........

The question was: Can people accept Australia's reign?

<quack> They have to

Why's that, DD?

<quack> Tossers like Slats4ever ramming it down their throats

You can't say that

<quack> I just did

Why?

<quack> No Ged

And?

<quack> I have this need - nay, this insatiable desire - for a debate

Ahem - you can't go around calling people 'tossers' just because you disagree with them

<quack> Why not?

Because it's rude - and personal. You wouldn't like it if they said it to you.

<quack> All right. Sorry, Slats - I withdraw that remark.

That's better.
