Arjuna Ranatunga, the former Sri Lankan captain, has responded to Matthew Hayden's remark of subcontinental batsmen targeting personal landmarks. Ranatunaga said that Australian cricketers were not willing to "absorb" the success of Asian teams and even cited Hayden's record-breaking innings, when he scored 380 against Zimbabwe, as an example of targeting personal milestones.

"The best question you can ask him [Hayden] is why he batted till he got past the world record. They should have declared much before that," Ranatunga was quoted as saying in a report by the Press Trust of India.

"I feel when subcontinent cricketers are doing well, they [Australians] cannot absorb it. And it has been the pattern for so many years. The bottom line is that the subcontinental cricketers are very gifted and talented. It is the way they use their wrists and I think they are more natural sportsmen."

Ranatunga also added that he wasn't surprised with Hayden's comments and said, "I am quite used to it. The best thing is to perform with the bat and ball." He touched upon the Australian tactic of mental disintegration when he said, "Normally they start with the top players and they try to put the mind into a different line."

There was also a mention of the current Indian side and Ranatunga likened them to his victorious team that won the World Cup in 1996. "I have always felt that it [the Indian team] was more like the side we had in 1996 with seven batsmen and four bowlers. Only thing is that they have to work little more on their fielding and fitness. If they do that, I am sure they will have a pretty good chance of winning the next World Cup."

Given how far Australia was ahead in the match, and they had so much time, and Hayden being an aggressive player, Australia had plenty of time to allow Hayden to get the world record. When they declared they had over three days left and I think a whole session left as well.

Steve Waugh would never do something to compromise Australia's chances.

Is there anything about the Australian team Ranatunga does like?

Coming from the guy who let his side bat until 6/952d (271 overs).

Sri Lanka could easily have rattled on to 600 & then declared to open the match up...apart from Mahanama, the rest of them scored their runs fairly quickly.

Hayden scored his runs in 10 hours 22 minutes, which is 8 minutes slower then Sir Garry Sobers 365* (he did it in 10 hours 14 minutes) so Ranatunga is just sprutting his mouth off with no thought behind it.

5 sessions is not a lot of batting, and seeing as Hayden isn't captain, how is it his decision?

Or is Ranatunga questioning why Hayden didn't get himself out on purpose earlier?

I think it's fair to suggest that Ranatunga might be using his wrist quite a bit on this occasion. Considering the fact that the original comment was regarding players who put personal milestones ahead of the team, costing them victories, Hayden's innings against Zimbabwe was perhaps a poor choice to use as an example.

Ranatunga still is stuck in that 'us vs them' personality of Asia v Australia.

    Sad really.

There's an old Derbyshire saying which is quite apt here (my Gran used to say it all the time)

"There's nowt so queer as folks."

Does anyone SERIOUSLY take this nonsense with anything other than a pinch of salt? It serves one purpose and one only, and all these international captains, spokespersons and associated hangers-on should at least be applauded for generating interest in the game. Bums on seats - almost worthy of being another Derbyshire saying.

Ranatunga hits out, what a surprise. I've come to ignore his comments now.

I'm not too dissimilar a batsman to Bradman.
Both of us have batting averages below 100.
