Solanki Is Back In The Odi

excellent

a wonderful 100 vikram in the c and g . now onto greater things in the icc.

vaughn can now be put down the order and hopefully geraint jones will get another chance to bat at 3 with rob key being sacked from the squad.

hopefully ian blackweel and rikki clarke will never re surface in theteam as they are both failures
but it would be nice to see the inclusion of dimi mascheranas and ian bell.

but solanki 1 of the most talented batsmen is back
lets celebrate!!

Although I regard Solanki as talented batsman and superb fielder, I can't see him being anything other than a simple stop-gap until Kevin Pietersen is eligible I think. When he is, he will slot in at 4 with Strauss moving to 3.

Good luck to Vikram though, he's a good player. And Anthony McGrath is a waste of space, Mascarenhas for England.

Solanki and Clarke all inhabit the same area for me, the dustbin..

Solanki is similar to Hick, but without all the runs... He will always fail to deliver at international level what he has promised in the county game..

he should have never been dropped, he should open with Trescothick with Vaughan 3 and strauss 4.

"He should never have been dropped"

What have you been smoking?

He was woeful in Bangladesh, and has been terrible in his career bar about 2 knocks.

And had he not been dropped, Strauss wouldn't have got in.

You're really fond of writing players off before their careers have got underway, aren't you? Do you even accept the possibility that a player might improve, or is it your firm and unshakable view that a player will always do exactly what he did on debut - because there is very little evidence that you ever change your mind after forming a superficial impression after one or two viewings. As it is, you're fast becoming an extremely reliable weathervane: it's worth noting down the people you write off because they are almost guaranteed to become major stars within a year.

Solanki's innings in the C&G final over the weekend was a league above anything he's produced before in terms of maturity, decisiveness and appropriate shot selection. It was as different to his previous output as the new, responsible Flintoff's batting is to Fred's early crash-bang-wallop-out-in-two-overs affairs. I've no idea whether he will be able to reproduce it on an international stage, given his previous history, but with the ODI team as incapable of winning a game as it is, it seems remarkably foolish to deny a chance to someone who's clearly improved immensely since his last go-round.

Cheers,

Mike

a couple of failures against Bangladesh shouldn't lead to dropping. I sort of agree with the thing about Strauss coming in but he would have come in instead of all the "all rounders". How many failures does Trescothick have yet he stays in. Michael Vaughan never scores a run in one-dayers either. Rikki Clarke survived the whole Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Carribbean trip and even some of the Natwest Series without performing (batting average of nine), as did Blackwell.

I was proved wrong with Harmison so you can therefore reliably state that I am wrong about everyone? Thats brilliant thinking mate...

"Before their Careers have even got underway?" How many One Day Internationals do they need? Rikki Clarke has had 17, and Vikram Solanki 20, and to consistantly fail in an era where English cricket is buoyant and people are fighting for places is unforgivable..

If Solanki has improved his all round game, and his returns, then to give him another go wouldn't be the worst thing, but to welcome him back to the fold on the back of one innings is an insult to those who deliver far more consistantly...

To be fair to him its (the reason he is back in the team) not just one innings, he's scored 4 List A Centuries this season and scored 942 runs at 52.33. Which is better than he has ever produced before - so i guess he is more deserving of a place now than before.

They're just the icing on the cake though.

20 knocks, 373 runs, half of which have come in 3 innings - and he's a specialist batsman?

Not many, considering a career average of 37.

He is captain and averages a fair bit more than Solanki (certainly more recently)

Clarke also bowls and is an electric fielder.
Blackwell also bowls.

Neither could be dropped once named in the squad under the Tournament rules, but have now been discarded.

Wow, glad to see you paid so much interest in my post. Clarke and Blackwell were given an extended run in the side despite never performing with bat or ball. Solanki is a better fielder than Clarke and who cares if they bowl, they suck. Solanki should have been given a better run in the side

Yeah. The C&G Final showed that he could produce the kind of stuff he's been producing all season on a big stage.

If England had an ODI opening pair who were producing on a regular basis, I wouldn't see the point of bringing Solanki back. But the ODI team is a mess, no-one is truly established except by custom and practice, so I don't see the harm in giving him another winter's worth of ODIs. But, given his age and previous performances, I wouldn't want to see them carry on revisiting that well if he fails to make the right impression on this go-round.

Cheers,

Mike

It's very debateable on the fielding, IMO Clarke is about the best English fielder.

As for the bowling, it is a second reason to retain, if he can get through a few overs.

Why?

He was a constant failure, as shown by his absymal record.

I'm glad you werent a selector when flintoff first came into the side then :) he's record was soooo bad at first for a good few years. Solanki just gets a a few series.
