i dont know much about karthiks ability but it is better to go in with a specialist keeper now instead of playing dravid as keeper. whether or not his keeping is good enough to make up for the superior batting abilities of kaif(whos batting in the wrong position anyways) is irrelevant because dravid seems to be granting those runs right back to the opposition by dropping catches and missing the simplest run outs and stumpings. AFAIK dravid was considered to be a short term option, to have one of your better batsman keeping till the next world cup instead of developing another ODI keeper would be foolish.

This particular thing caught my eye

Ganguly did not agree with the opinion of Robin Singh, coach of the Under-19 team, that Karthik was good with the bat but not a good enough keeper.

"I don't know what Robin Singh said about Karthik. But we spoke to Sandeep Patil who is the India 'A' coach before the selection and he said Karthik is outstanding.

"I have also seen him keep in the Under-19 World Cup, he didn't look that bad."

On Karthik playing the last match as a batsman and M S Dhoni keeping wickets in Zimbabwe, where the India 'A' team is currently touring, Ganguly said it was just for the final match of the series and it was meant to give Dhoni a chance.

"Patil told us that he wanted to give Dhoni a chance. Three of their batsman were unfit including Hemang Badani and Sriram and hence he asked Kaarthik to come down as a batsman and let Dhoni keep wickets."

but he has never played one!! and does he only average 19 odd in one-dayers? or were u referring to dravid?

Better suited to the limited overs format than Patel is a more apt sentence. Avg doesn't necessarily reflect it b'coz he bats at 6-7 for TN and so comes just to slog and also he played those odi's intermittently before last year and last season was the season where he really made the jump as a batsman .

Debateable on List A records.

And Patel isn't in the first XI.

That's my point exactly - IMO he must be a superb keeper to make up for the drop in runs, because Dravid may not be the best, but he's performing OK.

It depends on the way you analyse it. B'coz for Karthik to make it in means Laxman is injured and so either Kaif is promoted to no.3 [ he will make up for most of the runs] or Kaif will bat at 6 and Rohan bats at 7. IMO, there isn't much difference in Rohan and Karthik's batting and while Rohan offers the bowling option , Karthik cuts down the runs with his keeping. So only an injury would bring him in and i would choose Karthik ahead of Rohan incase of an injury to a batsman

Looks to me like he's a batsman who can keep rather than a keeper who can bat.

A slight clarification here.........the 15 member squad is for the Holland cup and Natwest Challenge only .

The Champions Trophy allows only a 14 member squad , and Rohan Gavaskar will be dropped for that event .


As far as Karthik playing in only "soft games" goes , that is a ridiculous comment by Ganguly.

There are no soft games in the Holland cup and Natwest challenge( even if India leads 2-0 in the Natwest challenge , I dont think Ganguly will risk playing Karthik when a 3-0 result would be a real morale booster before the Icc champions trophy. The only soft game I see is the game vs Kenya in the ICC champions trophy.)

Playing Karthik in just one game is stupid. That Dravid will not be keeping in the WC is a fact. The team management has to start playing a regular keeper sometime. Why not now ?

I can sense it. Even if the guy performs OK, you will pounce on people who advocated his selection. But Karthik will not let it come to that stage
