India just didn't put enough runs on the board in the first 15 overs. Both the openers have got to be aggressive. The building the innings part should be left to the middle order. I am not going to blame Tendulkar or anything but I think its time he went down to #3. He has become too defensive.
it was basically pure class by Zoyza and Vass...they kept the runs tight soo well that tendulkar lost his free flowing rythm. it wasnt tendulkars fault at all...it was pure impressive bowling by SL. i think dravids wicket was the turning point...

oh yeah vaas and zoysa bowled brilliantly. Vaas has always been a very good OD bowler but Zoysa bowled so well this whole series. But if bowlers are bowling well, the batter should try and unsettle him by taking a few risks. The sachin of the old would have done this and I have witnessed it too. Sachin is probably the world's greatest batter by popular opinion and I am sure he is capable. I think he has gotten into this very defensive frame of mind.

but still well done SL. They deserved to win. And I do now feel Pakistan would have been a better opponent for them than India.

he had the best strike rate of all the top 7 batsman even at the end of this innings. no way can he move from the openers slot.
i think yuvraj played a major role in india's defeat and something has to be done about his position when playing in the sub-continent(although they dont have to worry about it this year). i think opening with yuvraj may be a better option.

Indeed, or play him in the final 10 overs. Even Pathan has a genuine case for promotion in the batting order.

the sachin of past had to singlehandedly win matches but now he has to lay solid platform so the middle order can finish it off.

what if spinners are continuing till the end of the innings :-O
also as good an opener sehwag may be, he is very strong against spinners and his "couldnt care less" attitude can (patentially) be useful towards the end of the innings. so i'd switch yuv and sehwag when playing subcontinent.

Arjun, If you read the pitch report you should know why ganguly picks those bowlers...Ganguly knows a LOT more then you...so let him run the team the way he wants. Some times he makes mistake but the team doesnt lose just because of him

First of all Kudos to Sri Lanken Giant killers for an excellent string of performances ....... :) One may say that they are showing a flicker or two of their heady days in the mid 1990's ...... (Minus the big guns of course) .

How ever it's not necessary to become too critical of India ...... it's quite easy to pinpoint flaws in team selections and tacticle Captaincy decisions after the fact eventhough I myself am known to have taken the "armchair quarterback" role a little too seriously on occation.

In hindsight picking three paceman looks clearly a wrong move by India but by the same token the Sri Lankens playing at home made the same choice of 3 seamers in picking up Vass, Zoyza, Mahroof ..... The differance between the two teams is quite Clearly

1) Fielding
2) Fitness
3) Attitude (playing as a unit as opposed conflicting goals)

It must be said that IMO even if SL lost the toss they would have probably won the match based on their current form and I dont believe the wicket was that bad eventhough it was a slow turner as India found out too late through Zaheer. India has so many great batsman but Sadly no one had the courage take on the bowlers and swat a few mighty blows after Sehwag was gone. IMO having too many ortherdox batsman was india's downfall in this instance ....

Just for the Record How good was Attappattu ? ..... Classic , Just damn too classic drives ..... he is undoubtedly the most Beautiful to watch that I am green with envy !

Hm, i think they didnt take risk because the wickets felt and felt...
After Sehwag and Ganguly were away Tendulkar didnt seem to be happy and i got the impression that he didnt know what to do...
Yeah you are right...they were too defensive and Tendulkar had to say to his partner that he will take the big shots if he has the chance and the partner (in this case Dravid) should be a little defensive and just took the one - two runs...
They had just to keep the 4 run rate and then it would be very easy to win against Sri Lanka.. Yeah i know its really easy to say this , while the Sri Lankans ecspecially Vaas and Zoysa bowled very well but they could also take risk some times like you said...
The only thing after Ganguly was gone was to build a partnership...
On the first look it hasnt to be a good partnership but after staying there for 5-8 overs they would be secure...
I mean they should keep the pressure on the bowler and not at themselves....
If they would just lost 3 to 4 after 30 overs there would be a very good chance to win for the indians..
But they didnt and wanted some big overs..So they lost the match after losing so much wickets..

If he really knows this team well, how hve the team failed to win so many ODI series? They have won just 5 in 4 years, including 2 scratchy series wins against Zimbabwe ("Joke" teams like the English have swept them clean repeatedly) and a truncated series win against the WI. The only meaningful victories were the Natwest series in 2002 and the Samsung Cup in Pakistan, 2004.

Ganguly's captaincy may be debatable, but it will only work with a team overflowing with great players. If he was captain of this Australian team, he could win more ODI events. To be very honest, the Indians are not a bunch of disjointed but talented individuals. They're just a team lacking great players. The way the Lankans palyed, they could defeat anyone, even the Australians, who could just scratch to win. If there were any great players other than Sachin in this team, they wouldn't give up right in the middle the way they did. Hence, captaining an Indian team requires a lot of imagination.

Nobody knows the team better than Rahul Dravid. At least he is a thinking captain, not an assertive one. His seam attack was going for runs aplenty in Gwalior, so he brought on the spinners to slow the pace of the ball. It kept them in check and Zaheer returned to take a wicket. Clearly, his spinners were in better form than the pacers. He tried opening the bowling with a slower bowler and though the first Sehwag over went for 11 runs, Harbhajan brought things under control for some time. His selection ideas are not too bad- if he's wicketkeeping, he would play an extra bowler. However, the fielding had let the team down on both occasions he picked 5 bowlers.

Tendulkar is a form captain, like Lara, Sanath and Trescothick. He is the only great player here, apart from Laxman and Dravid. When he is in form, it rubs off on the rest of the team. A form captain will have benefits when in form as a player.

The bowlers are not having much say in the field placings and bowling changes, but if Anil Kumble was in charge, that would not be the case. In a match against England, where he was captain, he attacked every new batsman coming in with tight fields. Just one small partnership developed. His field placings and bowling changes restricted the English to less than 250, as opposed to other matches.

Captaining an Indian team may not be easy, but it requires some imagination, intelligence and innovation.

At least those three were in form. Besides, Maharoof just got 2 overs. All three were fully fit and functional on the field. Not their Indian counterparts.

Besides, why was Saman Jayantha not playing? He is a more intelligent batsman than Dilhan and knows which shots to play at what time, unlike slam-bang Dilhan Avishka who can't do much else. Hopefully the aggressive right-hander will return in the next ODI or Test series, because he is good enough to play in that team.

I believe the SL management was nao too happy about Saman Jayanta's fielding ability. He dropped some pretty ordinary chances in the asia cup.

On another note, my superselctor substitutions included Dravid and Chandana. My final rank at the end was 4th, so yay!

Asia Cup Final: View Pics
Discuss: Unlucky Tendulkar was never a match-winner!

Though India started as the favourites for the Asia Cup, especially after their
performances over the past few months, it was Sri Lanka who came into the tournament
as the only match-hardened team, having just played a two-Test series against the world
champions Australia.

All the other teams came into the tournament cold so to speak, as apart from the odd
player in their teams who may have been playing in the English County championships
or the leagues, just about everybody else was coming in from an off-season.

Sri Lanka looked supremely confident from the first game itself, which was not surprising
as they had thwarted Australia’s attempt to win both the Tests and their lower-order had
shown great resilience in doing that.

Having run the Australians close can give any team loads of confidence, as was seen
with the Indians earlier in the year, and Sri Lanka looked like winners. Their fielding was
agile, their running between the wickets was speedy and their fitness levels were above
every other team in the competition.

Sanath Jayasuriya struck form at the right time and with all others chipping in with
determined contributions, Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup to the great delight of their home
crowds.

Even in the aggression stakes, they were way ahead, as can
be seen by the fact that three of their players were fined by the Match Referee for ‘code of
conduct’ violations. That may not necessarily be a good thing but it showed how much
they wanted to win. They seem to have a good all-round side and if Nuwan Zoysa can
take a leaf out of Steve Harmison’s book and do the extra training, then he too can be the
new-ball bowler that openers are not too keen to face.

Harmison was known last year as the bowler who hardly completed a season without
being injured, and then he went and trained with a soccer team and look at him now. He
has played all the Tests and one-dayers without looking in any discomfort at all.

India looked rusty after the off-season but teams play so much today that they deserve
time off too. Trying to come back in hot, steamy conditions is not easy and it reflected in
the injuries that the team had. The major problem was that they did not get the kind of
flying start that is needed to take the game away from the opposition, and in the field and
running between the wickets, they lost out on valuable runs that can make the difference
between a win and loss in a close game.

The success of Sehwag and Tendulkar as bowlers has highlighted the need for utility
players, for it gives the team options.

By harping on the bonus points system, Pakistan is only bringing attention to its inability
to stop the Indians from denying them one and to the lack of communication in their
team. They should instead look at the wonderful batting of Shoaib Malik and his clever
bowling and see how he can develop into a formidable Test player as well.

Shabbir was also impressive and given the new ball, will be even more effective than
Akhtar, who can then concentrate on pace with a slightly older ball without having to worry
about wides in the limited-overs game.

Bangladesh were disappointing, especially after the way they had performed in the Tests
against the West Indies. They need to look at having specialists in their team for their
utility players are, to put it mildly, less than useful.

Hong Kong and UAE had their moments, and while UAE atleast have a local in their
team and certainly the enthusiasm, the Hong Kong team had no local and had players
with little future. They may have been better off with having some younger players who
could have benefited from the experience and thus put it to use in the next big
opportunity.

This edition of the Asia Cup was far too long and the organisers need to look at reducing
the dates as well as maintain continued interest in the tournament, for without that, there
will be less spectator and viewer-interest, which is not good if the intention is to
popularise the game in the region.
