    Compare them at first-class then
    Yes , good idea

    Shane Watson (23 years old)
    28 first class matches , 2038 runs@47.3 (HS - 157) , 53 wickets @28 (bb - 6-32)

    Jacob Oram (25 years old)
    48 first class matches , 2349 runs@37.2 (HS - 155) , 78 wickets@27.7 (bb - 5-30).

    Watson ain't better than Oram.
After taking your advice & comparing their respective first class figures , plus taking into account Watson is two years younger & plays in a substantially more challenging domestic competition I think most people would come to the conclusion Watson is the better player.

Of course figures dont always tell the full story but I reckon Watson would make the Kiwi team pretty comfortably.

Watson is a very good young player.

Even without his bowling he would still make the Australian team at some stage during his carear.

Harris , Mills or possibly Oram.

He has the potential to be a better player than Styris or McMillan.

even without his bowling you would think he would get a game as a batsman given New Zealand dont really have many really top quality batsman.

I would take McMillan out anyday.

Richardson, Fleming, and Astle are certainly not the worst!

    True.....

But nobody is suggesting Watson would replace them.

Chris Harris is past it, and Kyle mills is a substandard ODI bowler. Haven't seen him bowl in Tests.

Watto (in case anyone didnt see) has 3 more centuries, and a ten-wicket haul. To be honest, I didnt think the gap would be that big!
