Genuine question, are Australia trying to copy England's ODI formula and use Smith in the Root anchor role?
Not sure, do we have someone to fill the Stokes role? Warner's the obvious choice as he's committed assault before but maybe if we get enough sauce into Mitch Marsh he could throw a few at some randos one night

I don't think so tbh, if anything they tried to do that between 2016 - 2018 and it was somewhat disastrous. They've decided that this particular Australian side - and Australian sides in general - is much more suited to "traditional" ODI cricket and is as much about restricting oppositions as making huge scores.

Yeah cricket changed when England came up with the idea of a anchor role, right out of the blue catching everyone by surprise.

What's the thought behind this "anchor" theory that England use in ODI now? I've seen the term thrown around a ton but never fully grasped it.

A batsman that looks to milk the singles and turns over the strike, playing low risk cricket. Not really a thing since the 90's. Modern teams have more talent available and each batsmen adjust to the requirements of each innings.

Is there any spinner that South Africa have played well in recent years? Agar, who typically doesn’t even take 1 wicket a game, was on a hat-trick 3 times in the series and took nearly more wickets in a week than he did in almost 2 years of playing T20s (14 games). Root, Bess and Agar isn’t murderers' row and they have a tour of India coming up next.

they dominated lyon when we toured for the sandpaper gate series in 2018, can't think of anything more recent.

Good shout. He has a very poor record against South Africa home and away. Albeit he played a significant number of games against Kallis, who loved offies, and prime AB and Amla.

They've gone to a new level of trash against spin ever since the India 2016 tour.

That Nagpur pitch was so disgracefully bad it ruined South African cricket forever. Defend it now *****.

Keen to see Janneman and Verreynne bat at long last.

Yes felt sorry for Malan to get that ball first up! Maybe in hindsight de Kock should have taken that first ball so he could at least watch Starc from the other end for a ball or two, although that may well have cleaned de Kock up aswell based on recent duels.

Bavuma started off with a couple of beautiful drives off Hazlewood.

There are so many new faces in the SA setup over the last couple of years it'll take at least another 4 years before they're any good as a side again. Rabada, de Kock and Ngidi will keep them competitive in much the same way that Ambrose, Walsh, Lara and Chanderpaul kept the West Indies competitive in the back half of the 90s, but I can't see this SA unit progressing far in a world cup. Well as far as usual. At least I can't see them surviving the group stage.
