Glenn Maxwell in ODIs

Red

The normal awards that everyone else has
I know there's another Maxwell thread on the front page, but this is a different topic, so bear with me.

Why on earth isn't Maxwell playing as Aust's ODI spinning allrounder over Agar?

Maxwell did the job for us thru the 2015 WC.

Maxwell has very similar List A bowling numbers to Agar (esp regarding economy).

Maxwell is a significantly better bat than Agar, his SR is ridiculous. Why he wouldn't be picked over Agar is beyond me.

Maxwell would definitely be a better a selection at this point of time. He'd probably be one of our best players.

However, his non-selection for the recent series was very understandable. Even inevitable.

He has had a shocking run in ODIs over the last year culminating in a diabolical World Cup, and if I'm not mistaken he was taking a mental health break from cricket when the team was being selected. Not exactly a mystery that he wasn't in the squad.

Why isn't Glenn Maxwell in the squad?

Maxwell's ODI stats since Jan 2016

A fun part of that StatsGuru is by picking the 1st of Jan, I actually spilt his career of 110 games perfectly in half (here's the first half). Anyway, the rejection of Maxwell's bowling (first by captains and then by opposition batsmen) makes it difficult to fit Maxwell into the team imo, given he's a low 30's average guy (albeit at an amazing S/R - this is true either side of the 55 games, I think his first 55 games is at an average of 35ish while the last 55 is 29.8, so not a huge difference). Maxwell basically playing as a specialist batsman has meant including another all-rounder below him (usually Stoinis) who typically has much the same problem as Maxwell, not good enough with bat or ball. This makes for a weaker team overall. They've basically decided to dump both these all-rounders and just pick a proper batsman and more of a bowling all-rounder in Ashton Agar. Ideally, Maxwell should be batting at 6ish and bowling 6+ overs. This is basically the role he did have when Clarke/Bailey was captain (plus the other A/R was Shane Watson...)

One thing about the stats, Maxwell did bowl a lot in early 2019. In 2016, 17 and 18 Maxwell only bowled 55 overs in 32 matches
so for those that don't like clicking links, Maxwell's OD averages since 2016 are: batting average of 29.82, bowling average of 127.25. now that looks worse than it is, he barely bowled in 2016, 2017 and 2018, but he did in 2019 and he got pumped.
