So would Duminy count? Helped win us a Test series in Aus then basically did nothing for rest of his (unfortunately) long career.
His ODI career was certainly good though. Maybe even great when you consider his bowling. But yeah in tests looked like a future ATG in his first series then turned trash

He always played well against Australia even apart from that ton didn't he? Scored a very good ton in the 2016 series.

Whatever it takes!!!
There was a time when I thought RSA would have a dream batting line up.. One reason I had Amla opening in my team of the decade was because I always felt he should have done that, especially once that middle order took shape in early-mid noughties.

Smith, Amla, Kallis, ABDV, Faf, JPD would have been awesome.

I always think of Duminy as that guy that stepped onto world stage with a bang and went out with a wimper...most talented player I`ve ever seen that managed to do nothing with his batting ability at Test level.

Corey Anderson in ODIs is the perfect example imo. Golden arm, fastest ton and then injury and nothing.

Good shout. On NZ, Adam Milne was pretty hot for a short time. Looks like injuries have taken him out as well.

2008 was the best we saw of JP in test cricket, but he had some other moments. Remember he scored another 100 against Aus in a home win, got wickets, and then followed that up with a 100 in Sri Lanka, with a few more wickets, in another win a few months later.

Narendra Hirwani certainly the most notable that I can think of.

Also that guy who debuted in same test as Lillee. Or was it a game or two ago?
I think you might mean Bob Massie? Debuted at Lord’s in 72 and took 8 fer in each innings. He’s a terrific shout. Had just about pat his outswinger by the end of that your and i don’t think he played beyond the 73 Windies tour.

Jesse Ryder too. Should've had Ross Tayloresque numbers with the bat and been a useful 4th seamer.

Now he's playing as a specialist batsman at no. 6 for Auckland in T20s and doesn't seem to be bowling at all. Can't buy a run either.

He could play a part in future LO stuff, the ability is still there, and he'll only be around 31 by the time of the next World Cup. Any test cricket aspirations are probably gone for good now though, unless a Pat Cummins-esque body recovery happens. He's basically permanently injured. Even if he does get it together one wonders if someone like Ben Sears might knock him out of the frame anyway.

A couple of English players from the mid-1980s. Nick Cook's slow left arm had two or three phenomenal returns at home to NZ in 1983 and then in Pakistan. And then nothing. Tim Robinson did well at the top of the order in India and at home to Australia in 1984 and 1985, had his confidence demolished in the Caribbean during 1985/6 and was never the same again. I know I mentioned Richard Ellison earlier, but for those who didn't know he bowled us to victory in the vital 5th Ashes test in 1985, also struggled in the subsequent Caribbean tour and then got injured.

Going back 10 years, David Steele came in and did well against Lillee and Thomson in 1975, did as well as anyone against WI 12 months later and was then dropped.

Vijay Bharadwaj immediately comes to my mind. Seriously thought he was the new star in the down after the extraordinary show in Nairobi ODI series in 1999. When it happened, the mean reversion was brutal.

Azhar Mehmood after the epic start in SA, faded away.

Irfan Pathan, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan - couple of other names.
