How the **** do you manage to criticize a captain just when his team won a match with an innings and something.

When did the ruthless mighty Aussies become so obsessed with record breaking minnow bashing?

Also didn't Paine just take a blinder of a catch? His keeping is perfectly fine.

His tenure is a bit like Sammy’s. Nice guy, good leader, mediocre test cricketer brought in during a crisis.
Mediocre cricketer? He's got a higher test batting average than any other Aust keeper bar Gilchrist and Haddin. And he's a very good keeper.

he is mediocre in the true sense, in that he's in the middle of the bell curve for his role. he's solid, but that's it. given he's also a good leader he thoroughly deserves his place.

So basically he’s Watling with added captaincy responsibility thrown in.

Agree with Howard on the declaration. No one will remember this yet another test win over Pakistan (yawn) but a world record coupled with a win would have been etched in everyone's minds.
Finally, a truth teller haha and someone who has a feel for the wider game

And someone who acknowledges that winning and giving Warner an extra hour (of, as it turns out, the 7 hours that were not used) were not mutually exclusive

Really have become a bunch of dreary Conservatives on the CW discussion boards

No dare or imagination

ok but . . . that's with the significant benefit of hindsight

You know that Aus didn't have the information of exactly how long it would take to bowl Pakistan out twice when they declared right?

There was also the possibility of rain. Besides that I wouldn't call pointless and selfish glory hunting either daring or imaginative.

Is there a need to always manufacture some sort crisis with Australian cricket? Things are going as smoothly as they can. I am sure the selectors etc. are working on the long term plan and succession plans for Paine but really, it just makes sense that he leads Australia through this WTC cycle at least.

Tangentially, how great is it now that we have a WTC and the test teams can also start planning captaincy and line up tactics with 2 year cycles marked down for them. :)
How is it manufacturing some sort of crisis?

The Carey succession has been very topical, especially since his performance in the World Cup, including an article about the very topic in today's The Age newspaper in Melbourne

lol pointless and selfish glory hunting

clearly you're intellectually bereft

most people who have watched cricket can recall countless times when declarations have been delayed in order for milestones to be achieved

but that's 'glory hunting'

and a world record that's stood for more than 15 years, and may never be surpassed, is 'pointless'

Very disappointing to see CW luminaries arguing in such a personal manner. Much better to save such insults for the less deserving posters. PM me for details as to where to direct your opprobrium.

"Hey Davey, you have exactly one hour to make the 70 odd runs you need to pass Lara's record"

Pros

- Bulk entertainment for all spectators for that hour.

- Raining sixes and fours from one of the best hitters the game's ever seen.

- Mass media interest in the achievement if he does it.

- A huge talking point at the start of the cricket summer.

Cons

- Might draw a washed out test against Pakistan in a two test series we've already won.
