I read about a dude getting spotted at 40 in the ipl and played a couple of seasons i think timbi or something was his name bowling spin

if one of us gets good enough to be competitive in t20 cricket how can we prove it? + get to be a net bowler and potentially get a contract? anyone know or have experience of this?

The player you're thinking of is Pravin Tambe, and he was an established club cricketer in Mumbai for decades who got spotted by Rajasthan Royals talent scouts. He's played a lot of Kanga League cricket, which is apparently a really high standard, and was in the probables list for the Mumbai Ranji team back in 2000 when he was around 30. He also apparently played club cricket in England and ran a cricket coaching camp before his IPL/Champions Trophy opportunity came along.

I don't think it's possible to break into professional cricket without at least having sufficient exposure to high level club cricket for several years. David Warner went from club cricket to T20Is, and Kamran Khan was picked for the IPL based off a club T20 tournament in Mumbai. I'm sure there are other examples out there. Plenty of Associate cricketers make it into major T20 leagues now on the basis of their performances for their countries too.

Ok good post. I was wondering if you could get in as a net bowler somehow and fast track. But maybe even for that you need credentials in top level adult club cricket, Yes it was Tambe, I could picture him just not his name. I read an article once think on cricinfo that acted like he just played casual cricket and turned up one day to bowl in the nets I guess they massively over glorified it or I did in my head. I just feel like t20 it’s 24 balls for a bowler, if you could bowl good in the nets as a mystery spinner in particular then you are going to be good in games, maybe these teams and coaches aren’t so brave.

Wasim Akram played test cricket right after being spotted while bowling as a nets bowler, and I'm sure there are a few others.

But I think teams will only back someone like that if they're young. If you're above 25 and don't have any real top level cricket behind you then I doubt anyone will invest in you unless you're, like, incredible in the nets

I will figure something out. Even if it doesn't happen I've gotten a few test players out before when I was a junior, so I'm not bowling garbage. I'm a better bowler than I was then. Might be worth a try even if it's near impossible from here. I need to be sure first and try to replicate match situations in nets somehow.

btw Plenty of people can say this especially a lot of good spinners in asia I assume that never played pros , hardly any in England in comparison. The main thing is getting the speed in the right region for all these bowlers and I think life has made me better without playing games for a while.
and thanks for the info

Fidel Edwards, right? Lara picked him out of the nets?

Chris Pringle was in the nets in the UK as a knock around club bowler and ended up playing a Test v England.

Not older guys, just ones off the top of my head.

cool post but that isn't correct. Warner played white-ball cricket for NSW for a couple of years before his debut for Australia, he hadn't played First-class cricket (ie. red ball) yet though which is probably what you're thinking of

Warner should have found his way into the NSW Shield team a good year or so before he did imo.

I mean seriously, there were times they played Dan Smith as a specialist batsman ffs, that just defies all logic and belief

Yea it was never having played a FC match that made Warner special, not that he never played Domestic cricket.

Has there actually been a cricketer with absolutely no FC/List A experience that went straight into International cricket? Associates asside. Probably dozens in the early days of most nations.

Jack Alabaster IIRC played his first FC/LA match for New Zealand in the mid-late 50s (don't think it was a Test though). Alex Moir blocked his inclusion into the Otago side, as did prejudice against rural/Southland players.

Lahiru Kumara had never played any domestic cricket before his Test debut iirc, had a couple of games for Sri Lanka A and that is pretty much it. From memory Chameera broke down so hence they rushed Kumara into the setup pretty much straight out of U19s on account of his pace

He's not in the cricinfo list above?

So good shouts but no dudes that have done other sports for a decade (Matthew) prior. Hmm, guess I’ll have to get real good then call a team out during a blast game when they are warming up.. lol,

I drag the percent down to 0.07% chance (better than nil) , to be fair I am not too bad. I would prefer ipl tho in their conditions way easier for a mystery spinner (in all senses )that likes to bowl early on. Just a pipe dream but I’m not saying it’s zero chance because it isn’t
