International 12th Man
... Santner - what is he in the team for?
Serious question?

He is a key part of the white ball side (#3 ranking T20 bowler, #31 ranking ODI bowler, 10-34-2 in WC semi final win, useful white ball hitting at #7 / #8), and Kane is his domestic captain. When he made the test side it was as a batting allrounder at #7, in a playing XI with 4 quicks. The success of de Grandhomme means Santner now bats at #8 and NZ have relied on Wagner to take the majority of 3rd / 4th innings wickets in home conditions. Has worked OK at times - last month a Santner century and 3 top order wickets probably made the difference between a win and a draw.

In the sub-continent the NZ selectors pick wicket-taking spinners, but in NZ and Aust conditions they prefer an extra batting all-rounder that can bowl some overs of part-time spin.

Many Kiwi posters here would prefer a 4th specialist bowler instead of Santner in the text XI.

You better thank Christ
You better watch out
I'm telling you why
Santner Claus is bowling you pies

He's flicking his wrist
He's flicking it twice
He's gonna found out who's smashing his pies
Santner Claus is coming to town

Hitting the English while they're sleeping
Scored a hundred he's no fake
Who knows if he'll be out for good
When his glove a bouncer takes

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better hit out
I'm telling you why
Santner Claus is bowling you pies

If Wagner was that good australia would have been 4/55.
Largely following the 2nd Test from afar but by the sounds of it looks like he might've been able to instigate such damage if he was up against his own team mates. For what its worth I'd probably put Wagner ahead of Starc in Test Cricket, for Wagner's bowling style he's pretty economical whereas I didn't think Starc was as good as others did in his Ashes Test. Seem to recall him leaking runs during Burns-Root partnership adding to Hazlewood/Cummins workload and I wonder how Starc would do in a struggling bowling line up. Whereas this Kiwi bowling attack whilst being a good one has struggled yet Wagner has still managed to impress. Maybe a touch of recency bias as Wagner has 44 wkts in his last 11 bowling innings but to go with his style of bowling and get wickets whilst keeping things very tight, very often is impressive. Might be primarily suited to that 1 'trick' of going short but the fact many bowlers can bowl in the 130kph range but not many can execute a short-ball plan like him shows the high skill level he has.

Cummins way ahead of the pack for me, would probably put Hazlewood a bit ahead too, not so sure about Pattinson not seen him enough overall to make a proper judgement of him.

"NZ will have Paine in the Head for the next three days, it is a Starc reality. Unless they play like a Lyon they dont have a chance. Cant just Wade in these rough waters. I know truth Burns but I will be the first to Pat them on their back if they address their shortCummins."
Have a breather champ.

Have NZ been any more competitive than Pakistan were? Their batting looks as outclassed as Pakistan's bowling was.

Surprisingly NZ have never lost 3-0 in Oz; surely that will change this series.

Been pretty much a flawless summer of cricket for Oz.

the black caps are like the anti-all blacks when it comes to australia

even the league and netball team can win games and only one district of one city here cares about league
