Dale Steyn retires from Test cricket

Don’t know what you trying to get.

Steyn was a better bowler than Ambrose.
That Steyn has the best sr ever. And it's debatable that Steyn is better than Ambrose. Steyn had a better sr but Amby had a better average.

Ambrose and Steyn are both top 10 bowlers IMO, probably even top 5. Arguing which is better is like debating whether a Ferrari is better than a Lamborghini. One side might be right but really you'd take either.

Top tier bowlers (no order)
Ambrose
McGrath
Steyn
Hadlee
Marshall
Garner
Holding
Croft
Roberts
Lillee
Truman
Imran
Wasim
Waqar
Donald

These guys are very hard to split meaningfully.

Shame but inevitable. Can't beat Father Time. A true great and the best pace bowler for South Africa I have seen and given the depth since they returned there is no higher praise you can give him.

During Ambrose’s playing days, there were about a dozen great fast bowlers. During Steyn’s playing days, he was the only great fast bowler.

Personally, I think both of them are top tier fast bowlers.

A bowler being brilliant/not brilliant isn't really affected by other's brilliance/non-brilliance.

Most cricket fans hail Viv as the GOAT ODI batsman because he was much better than other batsmen of his generation. Similarly, Steyn was miles ahead of the other fast bowlers of his generation.

The only batsmen that can be compared to Viv were batsmen that were from another generation. Similarly, the only bowlers comparable to Steyn are bowlers that didn’t play during his playing days.

When your only competition is someone from a different time period, you are a LEGEND

Can we leave the boring atg comparison bollocks out of the great man’s thread. Especially when it’s pretty much splitting hairs.

Aw hell naw :(

Wish he'd played his farewell series in India tbh. Sucks to think that SL series was the last for the great man.

Small silver lining that has come out of his retirement. The amount of Steyn bowling porn I've watched in the last 24h.

The end of an era. Morkel, ABDV, and now Steyn - with Amla all but finished too.

What an absolute legend of the game. He had it all - I really don't think one could ask for more from a pace bowler.

Who would have thought after the Pollock/Donald era that we'd soon find a pace bowler that (imo) thoroughly outclassed them. Truly remarkable cricketer.

A couple of cricket fanatics were born 2 days after Kapil Dev lifted 1983 WC. One of them went on to become one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time. The other one aimlessly posts on CW.

I share my day and year of birth with Jimmy Anderson. You know what I dress up as on Halloween.

Michael Vaughan must be glad he was a fair bit older than Steyn because Steyn seems to have had a habit of bowling unplayable balls to him for some reason.
