Australian test selection 2019-2020

Welcome to the forum BackToBasics.

It's the omissions more than the selections which are questionable. Omitting Patterson was ridiculous. He was not dismissed on the List A tour and played three innings in first class cricket - 4, 32 and 38 - since his 76 in the shield final. Sure it hasn't been the best form but the sample size has been minuscule.

They absolutely don't need 6 bowlers and ****ing Marsh. Just Labu would've done in place of both Neser and Marsh if they really wanted an 'all rounder'.
I dont mind 6 bowlers since there is a 3 day tour match which starts potentially only 2 days after the first test ends.

Id assume the 3 quicks who play in the test wont play the tour match. I know its slightly weird to plan for tour matches, but with 5 Tests and 2 tour matches in a short period of time, it would be mad not to.

The Bancroft selection was so predictable. He was probably penciled in for his return during the Ashes as soon as his ban was given. He and Marsh are Langer being Langer.

Everyone is expecting Pattinson to be a human wrecking ball and that concerns me. Someone who's seen him bowl recently reassure me. Just need Smith to not disappoint if he fires.

What a sad indictment of Australian cricket that Peter Siddle has now been on more Ashes tours than Glen McGrath.

I still am in shock that Patterson isn't in the squad, on the back of a couple of innings.

It’s probably too much to hope that MMarsh isn’t considered to be an option for the top 6

They are gonna play MMarsh at 6 and the rationale is gonna be that it'll allow Pattinson to bowl short sharp bursts.

It's sounds stupid, but I've got a feeling it's gonna work out, and this series will be the making of MMarsh. And that Patto will tear Hales a new one.

Think you mean Roy. Hales still off on the nose beers iirc

As much as I think the Marsh selection is hot garbage, I can kinda sorta understand the rationale behind it. The selectors have had a fetish for a seam bowling all rounder, if it wasn't him it would be Stoinis instead.

Personally I don't think we have a single test class all rounder. Hopefully one of either Cam Green or Aaron Hardie could change that in a couple of years

I think its a good idea to look back at the XI we picked before the suspensions..

Warner
Bancroft
Khawaja
Smith
Marsh
Marsh
Paine
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

So since then only the 36 year old Marsh has gone. I think the selectors view the non-Marshes in the side above as the incumbents.

It almost feels like they picked Siddle to make up for only getting selected for one Test in the 2015 Ashes (which the local media have moaned about ever since) and Marsh was selected to make up for not getting selected for the WC squad.

I actually find the Siddle one especially remarkable. I get he's been picked as a 'specialist' for these conditions but it's been eons since he's been a viable force at Test level. He's taken 4 wickets once in a Test innings since 2013, which was that 2015 Oval Test which basically got him picked for this tour.

Have the people who cited his experience in these conditions noted how Australia went on those previous Ashes tours he's been on? People act like he's Terry Alderman in English conditions when he has no better than a solid record there. And this in an era where pace bowling is one area Australia has a lot of depth and quality.

Yeah if Siddle's picked ahead of Starc/Hazlewood for Test 1 it'd be a poor move, and that's despite Hazlewood being off the boil.

This squad really makes me think that the selectors have no idea who they think the best six batsmen in the country are, so they pick the handful that they're certain of (Smith, Warner, Khawaja) and then go with The Man In Form x4.

The problem is that, as Spikey as elucidated on more than one occasion, at some point The Man In Form is no longer in form. So by this logic, Burns and Patterson are no longer in form so therefore cannot possibly fill the The Man In Form slots even though they made tons in their last Test.
