When did you stop caring about 40 ball 100s in T20 leagues?

So Cameron Delport just hit 129 off 46 balls and upon reading that stat, I realised that it evoked no sense of awe or wonder. I think this meh feeling extends to franchise T20 as a whole. I can't remember how the PSL final ended, despite being from a cricket starved country. All I recall about BBL and IPL is that they went on for far too long. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all forms of cricket and was just watching Kent Vs Somerset in the Vitality Blast. It's just become too routine. I'm sure only few remember Russell's innings Vs RCB at this point. Yeah, yeah. I know this is a dull and commonly held opinion but my question is when did it become like this? Maybe Gayle's 175 was the last innings that made me go "holy **** that's incredibly!"

Also, I think Maxwell is better off becoming a T20 whore. That way his 25 ball 60 every now and then would be appreciated, along with some athletic catches. He hasn't improved one bit since his debut, his weaknesses are crystal clear and he's thicker than Afridi so this looks like the best course of action for him. Not dissimilar to Dre Russ, Bopara and the like.

I've never actually been to a T20 match, but I imagine that if I did and saw such an innings, I would feel some sense of awe as you can only truly appreciate the raw power of that kind of batting (potentially small boundaries notwithstanding) if you see it in the flesh. Agree that seeing them on TV, or just on cricinfo invoke little more than an intellectual acknowledgement that the innings is clearly quite good, but I agree with your feeling that even such innings are a bit run-of-the-mill with the number of T20 franchises around these days.

Also agree with you on Maxwell as his ODI career is presumably over after that world cup and they don't seem to want him near the test side again

It's no more noteworthy than a good club innings, is it? I remember a PSL match had a 55 metre square boundary. Maybe attending one such game could add some personal anecdotal worth to such an innings but things like that don't really stand out anymore. I'd say the same about funky T20 shots post ABdV.

I barely remember T20 innings the day after I've seen them, no matter how brilliant. The analogy of junk food cricket really is correct.

It sucks about Maxi because he did look totally improved in his last run in the test side and his FC record has always been good

The thing is that t20 cricket is a spectator sport, not a tv/ fan sport. It's the format of the game that you can go to without spending an entire day there. I'm that regard it's awesome.

It's not really designed to provide the same kind of experience as the ODI world cup final.

The world t20 is the only time I really care about the format, I'll watch if it's on and I'm bored, but as you say the over-saturation of leagues and the commonness of these feats completely deflates these instances of any impact

McCullum's 158 in the first ever IPL game was the peak for me. No other T20 100 has felt impressive since

Well, television has been the driving force behind its explosion in popularity, so I'm not sure.
Not really, it's more been the attendance figures at the ground. The longer formats still attract far better viewing numbers.

im not sure what to make about t20

honestly, i think it appeals most to countries where batting and cricket mania in general overpower the cricketing culture. well ok, the country - india.

my indian cricket tragic friend will stay up all night to watch the ipl. he is a diehard dual nz-india fan. my indian casual fan friends will just watch indian t20s and odis if they're on at a reasonable time.

my kiwi born friend who we've drawn into cricket since the 2015 world cup still tries to pretend he's a casual despite watching every ball he could of that uae test series, well he thinks t20 is ****.

and honestly, anecdotal evidence i know, but nz sports fans i know who are less hardcore into cricket than us seem to think the same. odis capture the western casual market far better than t20 imo. my cricket fan friends also think meh.

we will watch it, but we really don't care about the result. it's just a chance to hopefully see some new names and some fast bowler speed porn.

the last time i cared about a t20 was when i was watching ben wheelers chance for a test career disintegrate because he choked in one of these gimmick games at eden park, and i just felt bad for the guy who has never been good at t20.

Remember when lap sweeps over fine leg and scoop shots over the keeper were amazing and incredible?

now it's just standard

Am I the only person who thinks that the funky shots have significantly decreased in frequency recently? It all seems to be just variations of 'put front leg towards mid-on and swing' now.

The ramps, scoops and such have decreased but reverse sweeps and switch hits haven't, IMO.

T20 doesn't draw you in emotionally and the novelty of the spectacle has worn out.

T20 league knocks just generally lack any context or meaning. I definitely remember WT20I knocks clearly, Yuvraj, Hussey, Kohli, Samuels etc. played some pretty incredible ones.
