India need to find a no. 4 and 5 and get new spinners

India's issues at no. 4 are well known, but India also need to find a no. 5.

India have not had a settled no. 5 since Raina.

Samson at 4 and Shubman Gill at 5 need to be drafted in ASAP. Realistically speaking, India some new spinners too, as Kuldeep and Chahal really caved in when it mattered.

Jadeja has cemeted his place as one spinner you would feel. Shreyas Gopal is a good option. He has a strike rate of over 100 and avgs 15 in the IPL and has lots of variations as a spinner and has troubled Kohli and ABD.

Going forward the team should look like this -

Dhawan (eventually to be replaced after CT because he would be 37 when the next WC rolls around)
Rohit
Kohli
Samson
Shubman Gill
Pant
H Pandya
Jadeja
S Gopal
Bhuvi/Shami
Bumrah

That is a deep batting, some fine bowling and a solid middle order. With this team, India would have been in the final (okay Aggarwal for Dhawan's injury and anyone ahead of KL Rahul).

Agreed r.e 4 and 5, which frankly felt like team management self sabotage.

But aren't the respective records of Chahal and Kuldeep absolutely awesome? Before the knockout phase we were all praising this India attack as the most formidable they've ever had. I'd kill to have either of those in our lineup.

Yeah went with form over class, which was the problem. Vijay Shankar was picked because he was in some decent form in the World Cup period. How could he and Jadhav be picked over the likes of Iyer, Samson, Pant, Gill is beyond comprehension.

India's problem is they don't even give opportunities to the right players at the INt'l level, instead relying on others, who then become part of the long term plan of the team.

As for Kuldeep and Chahal, yes they won India, many bilateral series but when the big light games came up, they were found wanting. Also India get an obnoxiously long tail if Kuldeep and Chahal and Bumrah all play. You can't drop Bumrah obviously.

Gopal is a fine spinner with all the variation and far better batting. May as well give him a go.

Is England just not a good place for wrist spinners? None of them performed to expectations except Tahir. Rashid, Kuldeep, Chahal, Zampa, Shadab were all underwhelming.

As much as I love and admire Jadeja, has he indeed turned the corner? Really rate him as a test cricketer by the way and one of the great WC performances now.

Both were pretty disappointing. Chahal's spell against NZ hurt the team really badly.

The only wrist spinner to do ok the entire tournament was Tahir, so its tough to read too much into it. Could be vital when 2023 comes around though.
