Actually it's just a fitness and training camp they've benn called up for......the selection will be done later. But yeah good news that Munaf may get a shot. I think they should give gambhir a chance too he's quite impressive.

Considering most of the players to play in the one day tournament are certainties, this may well be thought of as the players the Indian selectors look to pick in the tests as well as the one dayers in the future.

Else there is no logic of having Akash Chopra in the camp. The exclusion of S.Ramesh very much means that Gambhir is the opener the Indian selectors are looking as an option for the immediate future and not Ramesh. It may well be curtains for Ramesh.

There also is no extra wicket keeper apart from Patel. There should have been one as a back up. This shows the selectors are placing complete faith in the average keeper Patel who has shown he can bat a bit. Indeed it seems an end for the specialist keepers in international cricket.

The selection of Bahutule is heartening. He should deserve a chance ahead of Powar and Kartik.

Its curtains for the international career of Dinesh Mongia it seems. I wonder how much chance Badani will get. Who is the next Indian test batsman in line after Yuvraj Singh? Certainly not Rohan Gavaskar who is more of a one day player.

Kaif, despite his modest first class average got called up in Pakistan when Ganguly got injured. He may well be the one. But Badani remains the under dog to get a chance to play in the Indian batting line up, whenever some one gets injured. Else its bloody impossible.

A bit of review ont the fast bowlers a bit later..

Regarding the fast bowlers of India 8-) :-

Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar, Irfan Pathan, L Balaji, Munaf Patel, Amit Bhandari

Zaheer Khan and Pathan are certainties. With Harbhajan to be back, no one else would be likely to get a game in the Asia Cup. Balaji and Nehra would be selected IMO. AA is the drak horse to be selected. Munaf Patel.. if he is half as good as people think he is, it would be a boon. I have seen quite a lot of Amit Bhandari and he doesnt seem impressive at all. I hope he never gets a call up again into the national team.

Probables for the Indian Pace Bowling Training Camp: Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar, Irfan Pathan, L Balaji, Amit Bhandari, Munaf Patel, Avishkar Salvi, Srishanth, S S Paul, S Mathur, S Trivedi, N C Aiyappa, Gagandeep Singh, Jogender Sharma, Mohammed Faizal and T Kumaran

There are 9 nams of bowlers there who apparently can bowl fast. S.S.Paul from Bengal is horrible and highly over rated. He apparently is the best fast bowler from the east and not Mohanty. Which doesnt say a lot about selections or the fast bowling talent.

I hope one from Srishanth, Mathur, Trivedi, Aiyyappa(who won the nation wide fast bowler hunt), Gagandeep (admirable performances inthe domestic season), Joginder And Faizal are different.

I'd say the selection of Dravid is a lot worse...

I think Mongia is still the best keeper in India, a much improved batsman, and deserving of a couple of more years of International Cricket.

God knows when the selectors will understand that.

And not deviating further from the topic, Munaf Patel deserves it. I think it's only a matter of time before he makes the regular XI. He might be too much of hype, but as Pratyush said, if he's half good as what people are expecting of him, he will do wonders for India.

I hope Irfan doesn't go the Zaheer way. I'm still hoping Zaheer will make a comeback.

Get over Mongia. He's had his shot.

Sorry, can't. It's nice to have youngsters, but the answer to your wicket-keeper is right in front of you, and you want to ignore him.

In a year or two Parthiv or someone will have cemented his place as test WK.
Parthiv has shown he can bat at test level and he's improving with the gloves. In anycase there's also Dinesh Karthik and the rest.

That's a long time for someone to cement his spot in a team at any level in any sport.

At least for now Parthiv has cemented his place in the side but who knows we may have someone else in a year's time.....because he's still got a long way to go and there are a few others who are getting noticed by the selectors.

Mebbe for the games against the ultra-minnows they should be given chances. Gambhir and Munaf have to be tried out.

Sudeep, Mongia is coach of Thailand now.

I think that says it all about his playing days for India....
Yes, it's sad. Not for Thailand though. It's a boon for them. Mongia is a fine coach... Personal experience :p

I believe in the theory that if India want to challenge Australia for the spot of the No. 1 Test team in the world, they have to have their best players out in the middle in the XI.

Now answer me, who's the best wicket-keeper in India? Parthiv Patel? Dinesh Karthik? Ajay Ratra? No.... Mongia.

And what more, Mongia's batting has improved immensely. He could give Parthiv a run for his money, if he wants to.

A few months back, I went for a Ranji game here in Baroda and saw him in the middle. He still has it in him. I talked to a couple of local players about him, and they said he still desires for a place in the International side, and is actually working hard for it.

But now it seems as if he has given up, coaching Thailand seems his immediate preference.
