It is interesting to see which current players are in or close to their countries top 5. Not so much with the more recent entries into test cricket, but the more established countries. Williamson is clearly there for New Zealand. Kohli is some where close for India as is Dale Steyn for South Africa. Steve Smith is the best of the current Australians but how close is he to breaking into that elite group?

Better than Lillee and McGrath is a very big call but maybe he can do it.

Ponting certainly has longevity over Smith but Smith still has quite a number of years left in his career. Still he has to be considered around the level of Ponting, Chappell and Harvey at this stage of his career.
As for the others I think it is possible. If he can get another 17 centuries he will be at 40, that would be very impressive especially as to do it his average would surely not fall very much. If he does get to near 40 test centuries with an average close to 60 then it would be hard to keep him out of the top 5.
