Awesome purple patches from players through history that don't get much recognition

Borges

International Regular
At that point, he was not incorrect statistically though, haha. Obviously, Ashwin was never going to sustain it for 800 wickets.
Just shows that purple patches (and short careers) do not not deserve a great amount of recognition.

In 2008 and 2009 Johan Botha averaged 28.62 @ 4.16 in 29 ODIs
Overall he averaged 40.5 @ 4.57 in 78 ODIs.

It gets a lot of recognition though, he's regarded as the 2nd best batsman of all time

Thread about not getting enough recognition -> People mentioning Sobers and Hammond. What.

Gambhir is a good shout. Pretty insane peak with basically nothing in the rest of his career. Mike Gatting is kinda similar. Averaged 62 with 8 tons in a 2 and a half year stretch in the mid 80s.

I think the thread is about purple patches which are not famous or well known. This is regardless of the quality of the players under consideration.

For instance, Sobers and Hammond are ATG players, but many do not remember them for a purple patch. Though both had insane purple patches.

Nicky Boje's ODI batting demolition of New Zealand.

Scores of 105*, 64 & 129 in a series in a row.

Have a look at the stroke-play. It's ridiculous.

It's kind of a given that if you're an all time great, you have to have had an extended run of great form at some point.

We should also mention Bhajji's back-to-back Test hundreds against NZ in that case, one of them match-saving.

Denis Lindsay scored three centuries and two fifties at 86.75 in five Tests against the 1966/67 Australians

Averaged 22 in his other 14 matches

Bit of a minnow basher I suppose

Gambhir for 2 years at his peak averaged 77 with 7 hundreds. We would've never hit number one without his solid contributions up top together with Sehwag.
Yes, he was superb from 2007 WT20 to 2011 WC in all 3 formats. Just poo outside of that.
