Yeah I did understand what you said the first time, my point was that there wasn't really much stopping him for batting on for a bit the next morning if he really desperately wanted the record. I'm sure a lot of players/captains would have. So even if the story isn't entirely true, there is some essence of truth to it.
Yeh, fair enough. I get the impression it wouldn't worry him either way. I think batting half an hour into day 3 would have been seen as the epitome of selfishness though, esp from the captain. As it was, the match petered out into a pretty tame draw.

I agree. Hasn't stopped other players though. Lara's 400 was at the expense of an almost certain victory against England.

Taylor easily if only he didn't hold the Aus record for top 6 batsman having most innings without a 50.

Taylor's 21 innings without a 50 in 95-97 was even worse as he already had 16 innings without a 50 in 92-93. For perspective Kohli currently has 15 innings without a 50 and people are calling for his head

Taylor definitely should have been dropped tbh

Should have replaced him with Matty Elliott as the supplemental Victorian to back up Warney. Because 2 victorians always works

It's because Taylor was such a good captain that he retained his place in the Test team. He really was an outstanding captain - great decision maker, great cricket brain and good manager of players. The best Australian captain I have seen and one of the best captains of all time, in my opinion

That 129 at Edgebaston in the 1997 Ashes series, made the world of difference. If we include that 129 - Taylor had 40 innings (which were the final 40 innings of his career) and scored a total of 1,719 runs at an average of 47.75. Here is the breakdown of his final 40 Test innings:

1997 - 129 vs ENG (Edgebaston)

So Taylor should have been dropped after 21 innings without a 50, then scratched around for an ugly 129 following by 4 more innings of 1, 2, 1, 0 so should have been dropped again

I think if Khawaja has a successful Ashes campaign he will go past Mark Taylor
This 2023 Ashes Series in England Khawaja has scored:

Runs: 496
Average: 49.60
Matches: 5
Innings: 10
50s: 3
100s: 1
Highest Score: 141

Overall, Khawaja's record in England reads:

Runs: 745
Average: 31.04
Matches: 12
Innings: 24
50s: 4
100s: 1
Highest Score: 141
