Was an accomplished death over bowler in his prime. Many batsmen of present will struggle to time his yorkers as it arrived between 90-115ks, and you could never guess the pace due to his high arm action.

Hard to split at this stage. I would have both in my team above Kumble and Harbhajan. This WC will tell the story. Chahal had the better tournament so far.

    Rohit
    Tendulkar
    Kohli
    ---
    ---
    Yuvraj
    MSD (+)(*)
    Dev
    Agarkar
    Kumble
    Zaheer

Not sure who to pick for the middle order. Azhar and Ajay Jadeja being fixers puts a spanner into the works. Raina and Dravid probably the safest bets - Raina adds 5th bowler support too - but could also push Kohli down to 4 and play one of Sehwag/Ganguly in the Top 3.

Not sure Kuldeep, Chahal, Pandya, Shami and Bumrah have accomplished enough to make the team yet, but they aren't far away. Ashwin, Bhajji and Ravi Jadeja the options for second spinner. Agarkar criminally underrated IMO, I'd always pick him in this XI, but Nehra makes for a good replacement if you don't rate him.

Perhaps play Sachin in the middle order & go with a Viru/Rohit opening combo?

Bumrah absolutely walks into the side even if his shoulder falls off tomorrow and averages 70 for the rest of his career imo. Madness to put in blokes like agarkar ahead of him.

So you want to neuter your best weapon by removing him from his best position to accommodate two inferior ones?

    Ok, Greg Chappell.

Sehwag was a bit underwhelming in ODIs, no? Had a few good years but outside of those he was just a wildly inconsistent hitter. A moderate upgrade over Afridi. Rather have ICC King Dhawan instead of him. Moot point anyway since Tendulkar and Rohit are locked at the top.

Chahal and Kuldeep are successful because of the high scoring era. Just think of them bowling to Salim Malik or Javed Miandad or Lara or Arjuna Ranatunga, who used their feet and swept in the arc from mid wicket to fine leg, planting the foot at the same place. Current batsmen hit these bowlers too hard as well. Players of yesteryear placed the ball in the gaps so it travels slow to pick up twos. Having said that boundary sizes have greatly shrunken, not allowing such strokes to be played.

Tbh averaging 70 would be an incredible effort if he's literally lost his shoulder

He doesn't use his second arm in the action - would probably learn to bowl with his left and given India's standards would end up our best ever anyway.

Kapil fits at number 7 comfortably, his avg-SR combo was almost specialist batsmen category for his era.

    Azhar >>>> Dravid

Gavaskar was a fine opener and averaged 45 in 2nd half of the career, when he started playing ODis regularly.

Azharudin is the first Indian batsman to make Significant world records in limited overs. Bar Kapil's 175.

I'd pick Ravi Shastri at 7 between Dhoni and Kapil. He was a quality allrounder in the 80s (as well as a dour opener in tests), v good fieldsman, star of the 1985 Championship of cricket, and could hit the ball when required (6 6s in an over).

    Rohit
    Sachin
    Ganguly (c)
    Kohli
    Yuvraj
    Dhoni (wk)
    Shastri
    Kapil
    Kumble
    Zaheer
    Bumrah

Pretty decent 5 main bowlers with help from Ganguly, Yuvraj, and Sachin. Strong top 8
