Windies squad for the 1st test had been announced. It's not actually THAT bad by our selectors standards. The test series might just be more competitive than I thought.

Jason Holder (capt), Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, John Campbell, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican, Oshane Thomas (cover for Joseph)

Powell and Bishoo have rightly been dropped. They can have no complaints. Keemo Paul is more unlucky, he just took 10 wickets in his last FC match. He can't be far off selection. Shame not to see Cornwall, I would love to hear more about that.

The headline is clearly Bravo's return, which is a huge boost to our middle order. Shamarh Brooks feels like a strange pick to me but he'll only warm the bench. Campbell is the next cab off the rank in terms of openers. Not ideal as he never converts starts. Will be entertaining though.

Overall a very strong seam bowling group but poor batting and spin options.

So the XI will be something like:

Braithwaite
Campbell
Hope
Bravo
Chase
Hetmeyer
Dowrich
Holder
Roach
Joseph/Warrican
Gabriel

Sub Brooks

Tom Flint

International Regular
Braithwaite
Campbell
Bravo
Hope
Hetmyer
Chase
Dowrich
Holder
Warrican
Roach
Gabriel

Would have much rather seen cornwall instead of Warrican to strengthen batting and possibly bowling too.

Burns
Jennings
Bairstow
Root
Buttler
Stokes
Foakes
Ali
Curran
Broad
Anderson

Gutted leach probably won't play the first test but Foakes really threw a spanner in the works with how he batted and kept in sl and can't really be left out

That is a good top 8 now without ever seeing Campbell bat.
In theory it's decent but Shai Hope has not kicked on and Kraigg has had a real slump. So it's still doesn't fill me with confidence.

Campbell is a talent, he has lots of shots and almost always gets starts at a high strike rate. He then inevitably gets himself out.

That side looks pretty exciting, certainly in terms of batting. It also strikes me that they might be good for a couple of collapses though and might find themselves in early trouble.

Campbell is a pace bowling specialist.

He will crumble against spin.
He's technically pretty good against spin and plays very nice sweeps and reverse sweeps.

His shot selection against spin, however, leaves a lot to be desired. He's an infuriating batsman.

I've seen a lot of criticism of the squad at how there isn't more guyanese players in there as they dominate the fc league. Who is really knocking on the door to play tests or are they just a strong all round team with no one player standing out.
Tage seems to score runs but I doubt they will open him with kraigg as they both score quite slow

SCC is best placed to talk on this. Guyana is an excellent team with the best tactical captain in Leon Johnson and a great coaching team. Not too many superstars though outside of Hety.

The other Guyanese who should be in is Keemo Paul. Otherwise Chanderpaul Hemraj won't be miles off selection as an opener and Bramble should really be the back up keeper ahead of Hamilton given his form.

England bowled out for 284 but carry on batting to close the day on 312/10.

What manner of cricket is this and why on earth have we allowed it?

Sounds like our seamers bowled well, particularly 20 year old Chemar Holder. Best hide him before he gets poached as well!

Love seeing Chemar Holder bowl well, came over here to play a few games for Port and bowled great, too much of a handful for you average grade batsman

Seems the way they go now, touring side bat the entire day and then bowl the next day.

Not in our matches! Cameron in bending over backwards for ECB shocker.....

Even the test venues are in places England will be surrounded by their own fans.
