Shane Lee or Ian Harvey

In the late 90s Symonds, Lee and Harvey all seemed to be regular members of the ODI side during the Aussie summer. Old man Tom Moody was randomly picked ahead of them for the 99 WC for some reason, but during the tri series these three big hitting all rounders were king. The three youngsters probably knew there wasn't room for all of them to succeed long term. I lumped them all together in my mind. For quite a while all three had a HS in the 40s, which I remember thinking didn't do justice to their talent.

Symonds had his famous breakout century in the 03 WC and forever eclipsed the other two. But who was better out of Harvey and Lee?

Shane Lee had a bit of a breakout summer with the ball in 99/00, I feel like he was being groomed for a permanent spot. I remember the commentators loved him and we all know how much selectors love picking brothers together. But only Brett would go on to a decent career out of the Lees.

Harvey had his moments too, and despite never snaring a fifty or a five fer he still helped win important matches with both bat and ball. Statistically a total no rounder sure. But there was that spell where he took 4 wickets in 17 balls. And that over where he clubbed 3 sixes in a row(when this was rare). Big moments for the Freak.

As I write this I realise it probably has to go to Harvey, but is their a case for the forgotten Lee?

Harvey easily. Lee was a good State-level batting all-rounder but a no-rounder in Internationals. Harvey was a genuine all-rounder in State cricket and an excellent bowling all-rounder in ODIs.

I think calling Harvey a no-rounder in any form is harsh. He was a better bowler than probably most specialist bowlers from around the world in International cricket.

I think an argument could be made that Shane Lee had a better ODI bowling career. I know averages aren't everything but 25 sure looks better than 30

heh I don't know how Shane Lee managed to pull out an ODI bowling average of 25. That's the same sort of average that Bracken, Kasprowicz and Gillespie ran around with. I mean Andy Bichel was basically a regular for a while and he averaged 31.

In the 99/00 tri series against Pakistan and India both him and his brother took a mighty impressive 16 scalps each, tied second for all 3 teams only trailing McGrath.

Shane averaged 18 and Brett 20. Wonder if the plans were to use them both as front line bowlers going forward

Had to have a look at why S.Lee didnt play more and apparently it was his knees. He was a hefty hitter too.

Harvey's bowling was pretty good in the dying overs.

Now, this is my sort of thread. Both very handy limited overs players in their day, but I think Harvey just gets the nod. Pretty much the first to really rely on the back of the hand slower ball, bloke was ahead of his time in that respect

Shane Watson basically took Shane Lee's place in 2002 and I recall the discussions at the time over which two of Watson/Symonds/Harvey to take to the 03 World Cup. Symonds played a miserable shot in an Aus A vs Sri Lanka game at the Gabba to get out which almost seemed to condemn him to missing out, but somehow survived the cut ahead of Harvey. In the end Watson got injured after the squad was picked with Harvey replacing him. Not sure Lee would have made it to the 03 WC ahead of Harvey had he still been fit.

I doubt there were ever plans to play Shane Lee as a front-line bowler. That is a pretty impressive series though, statistically

Hopes wasn't that bad, IMO. Would have played 50+ ODIs for any of the other teams too.

One thing I reckon we can all agree on is that both Lee and Harvey played in some questionable ODI uniforms.

A real low point, IMO.

Still a poor man's Scott Kremerskothen, though.
