Even game so far. Not lost many wickets but not scored a lot of runs either. 215-2 can easily turn into 250-5. Every other ball seems to be doing something especially when Cummins was on. If they had the sense to hand him the new ball India could have gone in at 200-4 instead.

I predict the pitch will flatten out by the end of day 5 and 400 will become chaseable. Kohli needs to score a double century for India to have a chance.

There's been some pretty decent matches on the MCG in living memory though - Duminy's 166 springs to mind, the 2011 boxing day test against India (good batting rewarded but some pretty frenetic collapses too), the SL game in 2012 had plenty of pace and bounce in it too.

Ian Chappel always used to harp on about how the pre drop-in pitch would always become slow and low - making 4th innings chases quite difficult, but there was certainly a time where the MCG was among the fastest pitches in the country about 5-8 years ago

Melbourne pitch has been trash for as long as I can remember. This one resembling some of the mullygrubber pitches of the 80s, though not quite as bad. Seems like the best a side batting last can hope for is a road so they can get away with a draw.

Just casually assuming something that's been done like 5 times in history is a likely scenario

Pretty sure there have been more than 5 occasions in history where 400 was chaseable but wasn't done because the target was much lower or much higher. India almost lost a test match in South Africa after setting them 470 something to chase. That after first innings of 250 plays 250.

MCG pitch has been a drop-in for almost 20 years (triggered by an AFL player breaking his jaw when he hit the pitch area during a match & taking legal action).

Thing is I can't recall a time when the MCG pitch was highly regarded - let alone be the best pitch in the country.

It was notoriously bad during the early 1980s; Greg Chappell almost refused to play an ODI because it was in such bad condition.

Since the drop-in era, for the first decade or so it was considered to have trampoline type bounce but no real other standout features. Now it's just a boring dirge.

I think that's what's most damning about the MCG pitch in recent decades; it has no real defining characteristics that virtually every other Test ground in Oz has.

Did Kerry O Keefe really go on air and say Mayank Agarwal scored a 300 against canteen boys?
He was trying to make a joke about the names of the domestic teams rather than actually cast cast aspersions over the quality, but it fell very flat and just came out cringey. Probably partly because he seemed to confuse the Indian domestic scene with the Pakistani one.

Why would Pakistan domestic scene come up in India Australia series? It doesn't even come up during a Pakistan series

Nah he was trying to make a joke about some Ranji teams supposedly being named after government departments, banks, utilities providers etc, but that's not even true because he'd mixed up the Ranji with the QeA Trophy.

Looking forward to some jibes about SL national players notching up runs against the Nondescripts
