DoG's Top 100 Test Bowlers Countdown Thread 100-1

Should factor in that most of the time Verity had Bradman waiting to receive his balls at the other end
Well, a bowler's average and strike-rate are adjusted according to match conditions and strength of opposition, so if Verity was bowling when Bradman was racking up double centuries then it would be reflected in the adjustments :-)

Verity was ranked #6 in the spinners list compiled by CW recently. This methodology seems to vehemently disagree with that assessment.

Number of wickets in career, strongly dependent on the number of opportunities, and strike rate, strongly dependent on prevailing batting style, are both going to disproportionately benefit modern players who often can play more tests against less defensive batting than older players.

Probably because in rating spinners one does not normally look at strike-rates. But in this methodology averages are factored in together with strike-rates at a ratio of 4:1. Whether that ratio needs changing is up for debate. The same ratio is used for test batsmen.

SR is adjusted. Wickets isn't the only longevity measure (years).

Verity playing a lot of matches against AUS and a lot vs minnows probably balances out.

He gets burned because his SR is bad for his era and his wpm (career wickets) is very low. Mostly the SR because of how the formula is set up. I think we are going to see a few spinners a bit lower than expected.

Bill Johnston only bowled in 14 innings vs. quality opposition so suffers a loss of points (minimum of 50 innings required overall/peak and 25 innings against non-home and quality opposition for full points).

This is partly true. As time goes on the average number of wickets taken across the top 100 will increase, therefore devaluing it somewhat.

Also, averages and strike-rates are also adjusted by era. Therefore all bowlers in the 21st century will have their strike-rates adjusted upwards.

Disappointed MM, thought you were one of the more knowledgeable cric-webians out there after all those drafts.

Bruce Taylor was a fine all-rounder cricketer, averaging just over 20 with the blade, including a couple of Test hundreds, with 111 wickets @ 26 with the ball. Famously scoring a 100 and taking 5-fer on debut in Kolkata. 2nd Test, New Zealand tour of India at Kolkata, Mar 5-8 1965 | Match Summary | ESPNCricinfo

Top cricketer Chris Cairns. Often delivered against Australia in a tough era.

Haggard was vastly underrated by all involved. Fine bowler who paved the way for Jimmy and is overshadowed by the latter.
