Australian test selection 2018/19

The one time an Australia A side was a genuine A side was when it featured Hayden, Martyn, Ponting, Langer, Lehmann and Blewett and they pushed the incumbents so hard that Reiffel was made 12th man for Australia so that the A side wouldn't win.

Yeah people have weird hangups about Australia A sometimes, as if it has some sort of special meaning and isn't just what they call the "PONIs who aren't doing anything right now who we've arranged some matches for" team. Not selecting Paine because you can't have the Test captain play for "Australia A" would be ridiculous, and if he doesn't get selected it definitely won't be for that reason.
Exactly. In the domestic thread I saw the name Mark Steketee nominated for the A tour. If you look at his stats this Shield season (and incorrectly think that every ground is as good for bowling as the Gabba) you can sort of understand it.. But in an Ashes year in England there is absolutely no way he is making that tour. He just isn't. The A tour is touring the same country as the full squad for a very obvious reason IMO..

I want Pattinson to go to England.
He'll definitely be there if he's not injured.

Our say the following bowlers will be touring:

Starc
Cummins
Hazlewood
Pattinson
Siddle
Bird
J Richardson
Meredith(?)
Neser(?)
Doggett(?)

The last 3 are PONIs and would be there more on potential than results. But it's clear that the top 7 are all going to be on tour as they stand out as being very, very good.

Batters to tour:

Warner
Burns
Harris
Bancroft
Khawaja
Smith
Patterson
Handscomb
Maxwell
Wade
Head
Labaschagne(?)

Not really sure who the last spot will go to but Labaschagne seems as good as any. He's a PONI after all.

Paine will keep and Carey will by the A team keeper as he's the anointed successor.

How many do they usually send to England? 18-20 seems like a lot. Some deserving players will probably miss out on the squad but still be in England on the A tour or playing country cricket I'd guess

I'm sick of reading about Australia A side selections like it's a real thing in England this year.

It's the Ashes warm up tour while the WC is played at the same time, so WC squad players will not be picked until the last 4 day game.

And Test incumbants Paine, Harris, Burns, Head and Patterson will be there as only tour games prior to ashes

A report has come out that the Australian bowlers (Starc, Cummins, Hazelwood, Lyon) were threatening to refuse to play Australia's last Test in SA if Warner wasn't banned. Don't know how legit it is but interesting nonetheless
Interesting this is coming out now. Is this a preparation for Warner not being part of the Ashes squad?
I still have an admittedly conspiratorial suspicion that the bowlers are and were much more involved in all that than they let on.
