So ironic, given that in actual fact it's "the length and nature of the sanctions" themselves which have caused "considerable impact on the reputation of Australian cricket, here and abroad" rather than the actual "crimes".

Had they just treated it like every other country, Smith and Bancroft banned for a game, everyone would have forgotten about it in a few weeks. CA makes a big deal out of it, bans them for a year and hence hammers into the minds of every casual fan worldwide that these guys are the worst cheats in the history of cricket, ruining their careers and potentially their lives.

Well done CA, but no, it's not your fault. The bans were appropriate right? Just lol

I will say this, cancelling the bans would have been weird given this whole process was just a knee-jerk to the review. Which as interesting as the review was, it was still a giant '**** you' letter to CA. And I hate to say it, but the cynic in me says it was done that way to take the onus off lower levels of administration and the players themselves.
