As good as his form is, I don't honestly believe Wade could cut it as a specialist Test batsman. A lot of people are forgetting that he averaged about 21 with the stick in his last stint in the Test team, the main reason why he was dropped in the first place. Absolutely he should be in the World Cup squad, but tests are a different matter entirely

For clarity, with Smith and Warner back I don't see Wade in the Test side, but certainly should be in the Ashes squad in front of a spud like Labushagne. If for no better reason than to show that Shield runs get rewarded.

But I would have him in the white ball 11.

Wade surely has to be the WC keeper, aside from his test aspirations, doesn’t he?

The next step for potential Ashes batsmen is the A tour of England. The Ashes squad will be selected very late to allow the two FC matches against English opponents to be considered. Wade should be part of this A squad and given a chance to prove he can score runs in England in the FC matches.
However the A squad will also be covering the Australian WC squad in case of injury so there will probably be players like Turner or Maxwell in the A squad, maybe even D'Arcy Short. Tim Paine will be captain of the A team, and it has been suggested Head, Harris and Patterson will be in the A squad. Leaves not much room for Wade or Labuschagne or Pucovski or any other young batsman who could be considered.

Yeah this genuinely could be the way they go, mostly because half of the batting line-up are #6s playing too high and opening up 7 lets you pick 'em all + Smith.

Is NCN good enough to bat 7? Solves the 5th bowler problem. Him at 7 with Cummins at 8 isn't too bad a tail.

I'm assuming the general feeling is that he has improved significantly, and that his domestic numbers reflect that, rendering his previous international stats not particularly relevant. Like predicting Steve Smith's results post-2014 based on his 2011 run in the Test team.

Don't need that many bowlers and Maxwell or Turner would have more benefit than a 5th specialist bowler. Although any team that leaves Carey out starts ahead in my book.

Yes, but I suspect he really doesn't use them particularly well in that endeavour.

That might be your general feeling. But I remain completely unconvinced.

On a completely unrelated note, Lloyd Pope took 6-67 to bowl Kensington to semi final victory against Adelaide Uni on the weekend. Had a disjointed season, struggled a bit on occasion, but it's good to see a reminder of what Pope is capable of

For every Steve Smith that does suddenly improve significantly, there are about 50 Devon Smiths who keep on producing the same old shite for 10-15 years.

The thing is also Smith was in his early 20's. No-one comes into Test cricket the finished product at that age. Wade is over 30 and has had two chances at FC level already. To me he's someone in hot form rather than a significant improvement on his previous Test numbers.

No it's not my feeling at all, I said that it seems to be the general feeling around. I'm not commenting on whether it's accurate or not, just that the argument of bringing up stats from his pervious run in the team wouldn't be particularly relevant were people feeling he was a significantly improved player.

Blues seamer Trent Copeland is excited that three players could make their First Class debuts for NSW in the must-win final round of the JLT Sheffield Shield against Tasmania at Blundstone Arena starting on Wednesday.
Batsman Nick Bertus, 25, fast bowler Liam Hatcher, 22, and rookie wicketkeeper-batter Baxter Holt, 19, have all been selected in a 14-man squad for the fixture.
Holt is on stand-by for Blues captain Peter Nevill, who did not travel with the side to Tasmania on Monday due to the expected birth of his first child.
Recent Australian Test debutant Kurtis Patterson will lead NSW if Nevill is unavailable.
The Blues must win against Tasmania to guarantee their place in the Sheffield Shield final against Victoria starting on 28 March at Junction Oval.
Copeland said he and the team wish Nevill all the best with the birth of his first child.
“This is something that is far more important than any cricket match … I’m so excited for him and Sammy,” Copeland said.

He explained that the three potential debutants have been working hard behind the scenes to earn their call-up to the squad.
“Baxter Holt is the Australian Under 19s keeper, he went over to Sri Lanka this year (with that squad) and made his debut for the Thunder.”
“Nick Bertus has been churning out runs in Grade cricket for years and deserves his chance.
“Liam Hatcher … bowls 145km/hr, he’s red-headed, he’s angry at times and he’s got a bit about him that I think will lend himself to playing well at Shield level.”
All three performed consistently throughout the Toyota Futures League season that concluded last week.
Hatcher claimed 18 wickets in his last two Futures League matches including two five-wicket hauls and career best figures of 7-43.
Bertus scored 418 runs at an average of 38 across both the T20 and four-day formats. It complements his second season of more than 1,000 runs for his club, Parramatta, in McDonald’s NSW Premier Cricket during 2018/19.

Average of 38 doesn't seem that special tbh
