Didn't have a long enough career at the top to be described as great - very good I'll concede, but he's no Graeme Fowler

Very good player but I can name 4 players better than him that played since Gooch retired in Thorpe, Pietersen, Cook and Root so not sure he goes down as one of our great players.

Could also make a case that Alec Stewart was better. His record as a non keeping opener was exceptional for his era and he was certainly a more destructive batsman than Trott when in full flow.

Yeah you would easily have his career below those 4 but he was a huge part of the best England team for decades. In a similar way to Swann, he briefly filled a role that has pretty much always been a problem position for England for most of the time I have been watching cricket.

Na, him and Iniesta leaving the scene around the same time is uncanny.

I hope his international career doesn’t end up being defined by the way it ended. Was a top player.
