India's Road to World Cup 2019

Funny how you can post that in a thread about Neil Wagner and have it mean something else completely.
'India's Road to World Cup 2019' is a thread about Neil Wagner? Why? Is he the real son of Rahul Dravid?

Hey, what's happened to this road thread? Lets travel along this road; it's great fun. There are several (too many) 'Road to Ashes' threads in the archives to show us how this is done.

The basic idea is something like this: imagine that there is a hi-tech bus moving along this hypothetical road, with captain Kohli at he wheel and Shastri as the navigator. The journey starts with an initial random selection of ten more players in the front seats. If we want, we can assign numbers to these seats in true Aussie style (1. Steve Smith (driver) 2. David Warner etc.).

All the cricketweb experts cram themselves into the back seats and continually shout out instructions: 'take a right turn here, grab this guy who's really good, catch the pest who's sitting in seat #5 by the scruff of his neck and throw him out, and put this new guy in that place' etc.

This way, at the end of the journey, we end up with a dream team of true world beaters.

With the kind of form he's in, Sanju Samson can be considered as a specialist batsman at no. 4.

Man, there are too many good contenders for that spot (Suryakumar, Rahane, Iyer, Manish) - hope we don't screw that up.

But my favorite top 4 still remains:
Rahul
Dhawan
Rohit
Kohli

I understand why people don't want to move Rohit and Kohli down the order, but it's worth a shot imo.

If we are going to remove someone from the top - I'd rather move Dhawan, Rohit's real advantage is in games where he stinks the first 30 overs and then beasts the next 20. Still think Rahul can do a fine job at 4 with a few more opportunities.

Also, Pant / Shankar experiments show that it's quite probable for the domestic superstars to absolutely suck at international level - at least at the start, so I'd be careful before hitching on the Samson express.

I think India has to go with someone other than Rahane at 4. Raina, Samson and even Pant are contenders.

Yea my excitement for Sanju lighting up the IPL has been ruined by this.

"We should pick Sanju Samson in the side!"
"Why?"
"Did you see him in the IPL?"
"Dude did you see Dhoni in the IPL?"
"...FFS"

never seen Dhawan not opening in any match in any format - so thought that's not an option - but I'll be open to it if it was an option

Whichever batsman they decided to move, India definitely need to experiment with a top order of their three openers (not Rahane - the other ones) and Virat pretty much immediately.

Exactly. Whatever we lose from Kohli going from 3-4 or whatever is far less significant from dropping one of the 3 openers and playing Rahane etc instead. It needs to be tried out properly. The 3 ODIs they tried it in against Sri Lanka last year weren't enough.

I'm delighted that this road has not been completely abandoned.

I do quite like this droll idea of selecting players based on their ability to help with tactics; what we really need is one captain and ten other players who have the greatest ability to help with tactics.
Just can't lose any game with that kind of concentrated tactical acumen.

This is going to be held in England, right? Hopefully, there is going to be a wee bit of swing: wouldn't want to miss watching Rohit open.in those conditions.

Haha ya that was exactly my reason of not opening with Rohit
