International Captain
Situation: A Pakistan player has scored 203 runs and New Zealand are playing for nothing. Who gets him out? Mark Richardson. His career test figures become after this match: 10-0-17-1, with an eco rate of 1.7 and a S/R of 60.0
He doesn't get used again (that I know of). You do have to scratch your head and wonder why he isn't put in again to see if he can keep it up - what's so bad about having an opener bowling? There seems to be something against it these days, as if it was taboo (although there are a few exceptions such as Gayle) to give your opener a good spell in every test, regardless of what his figures might be. Personally, I think that Richardson should be given a few more shots at bowling, just to see if he can prove consistency. No harm in bowling slow left arm orthodox if it's going to get you the wicket of a double century maker - he may well have got that wicket earlier and saved 100-200 runs!
Of course, we have to realise that it doesn't always pay off, God bless Chanderpaul for his efforts in the recent ODI. But if the plumbing ain't broke, don't fix it - in other words, if something works, then make the most of it until it doesn't.
