If we're picking a second spinner then I'd rather vote VVS. If not Mankad plus 2 spinners is a bit excessive.

What is the third spinner going to do apart from giving the main spinners a rest?

But the problem always with selecting an Indian team is whether you select only for home conditions or all conditions? Most ATG sides so far have been selected based on the latter.

I think even if you account for diminishing returns, a third spinner of the quality of Chandra/Bedi/Gupte is superior to Zaheer Khan.

If we pick Kapil, Mankad and Ashwin as 3 out of 5 bowlers, that'd be a pretty damn good tail. Srinath and Zaheer, if picked, can be decent contributors too!

Yeah, you have to load an Indian team with spinners. Even if they suck abroad, at least they will have a good chance of dominating at home (and in places like Pakistan/SL/UAE/Bangladesh etc.). That is better than being mediocre everywhere.
