Best South African to play test cricket for England ?

Dendarii

I initially thought it would be worth a go if we include people who came to England when they were young boys.
Then it got tricky at numbers 2 & 5 and finding any bowlers at all. Although I've probably forgotten some obvious candidates.
I suppose Robin Smith's older brother could open with Strauss.

1. Strauss
2. Maybe C. Smith
3. Trott
4. KP
5. R. Smith / D'Oliveira / Lamb
6. T. Greig
7. Prior
8. I. Greig
9. to 11. - No idea
Nick Compton as a potential opener? As for South African-born bowlers, the only ones I can think of are Tom Curran and Jade Dernbach (who I think England fans might be grateful never played a test).

Yeah, Compton is more deserving than Chris Smith.
And agreed about Tom Curran - we crossed posts there.

Did Stuart Meaker play a test? Only ODIs stand out. Nothing to shout about mind.

Think you would have to go to Kenya and Zambia for bowlers with Derek Pringle, Phil Edmonds and Neal Radford.

Yup, if we only want players born in SA we'll have to go for Meaker and Dernbach, though they only played ODIs
Sam Curran probably end up better than either of them is a year or two.

Do not understand why everyone has a beef with Anderson. He has always struck me as one of the most down to earth, no airs and graces, cricketers.

He already had attitude problems in SA... hence him leaving for Eng in the first place. I do think though he would have been reigned in a bit more with a cpt like Smith and players of equal and better calibre around him in the SA team, part of his problem is he was England's best batsmen and that fed his ego substantially.
More like he had problems with quota, like Russow, Abbott etc did. KP was very vocal about it and SA did not like him for it.

Abbott had very legitimate reasons to complain about the quota system. Rossouw less so, but to my knowledge neither attributed leaving to quotas- both cited financial security.

Pietersen had no reason to complain about quotas. He was dropped from a provincial side due to not being good enough and chose to blame it on quotas. He hadn't learned to bat yet and was playing as a specialist spinner. This is a guy who averages a wicket every 6 innings. He then chose to run his mouth to the media, complaining about the fictitious slight on him and badmouthing South Africa in general at every possible opportunity.

South Africans don't have a problem with players travelling for easier or more lucrative opportunities (although we regret losing some of them). We wouldn't have a problem with people citing quotas as a reason for leaving if it was a legitimate reason.

We have a problem with Kevin Pietersen.

None of this is true but I will give your post a like.

Kevin seems like a good guy to be honest, you're all acting like wankers about him.

KP for me.

Everyone who defends Pietersen should be forced to endure being locked in a lift with the bloke. Cricket as a sport should hang its head in shame as it has truly produced two of the biggest wankers, one Australian, one South African-England wannabe, and they both played for the same Hampshire team.
