    The top all-rounders (by rating)

While working out who had been ranked #1 all-rounder in the world for the "We're not #1" draft, I noticed that the list of highest ever rated all-rounders doesn't seem to be given anywhere; so in case anyone else is interested, here it is. (The figures below are peak value for batting rating x bowling rating/1000, and date first reached: it's possible that there are some rounding errors):

Bearing in mind his highest was 433 and I've found others who hit 540+ without thinking too hard I think you're talking out of your arse.
marc71178 - President and founding member of AAAS - we don't only appreciate when he does well, but also when he's not quite so good!

Anyone want to join the Society?

Peak rating. It's not trivial to calculate a career rating - David North has had a go here, but explains why his figures aren't totally "fair".

A more interesting way to rank all rounders would be to rank them by their lower peak rating between batting and bowling. Botham will pull ahead in a big way. He is the only cricketer ever to achieve 800+ rating in each discipline.

    Interesting.

There's a bias in how these are calculated in favour of more balanced allrounders due to the points being multiplied rather than added. This gives a picture of how good they were as allrounders, but not the actual value add. Without looking up their records, I doubt players like Benaud and Gregg could have peaked higher than someone like hadlee.

I decided to this. It ain't quite as interesting as I thought.

To minimize the work I would need to do, I first took all players who had received 400+ peak all-rounder rating from OP. From that set I limited to players who are in top 100 peak ratings either as batsman or as bowler. Below is the list.

Player Lower Discipline Peak rating in lower discipline
    IT Botham / 811
    JH Kallis o 742
    GS Sobers o 715
    KR Miller / 681
    Imran Khan / 650
    A Flintoff / 645
    GA Faulkner o 639
    R Benaud / 623
    Kapil Dev / 598
    MH Mankad / 590
    MA Noble / 586
    SM Pollock / 565
    AK Davidson / 526
    RJ Hadlee / 483
    RA Jadeja / 463
    R Ashwin / 458

Yes, Botham is then comfortably top (list gives the players lower peak rating of the two, followed by peak batting & bowling ratings):

    ..1..........IT.Botham..811.(811,911)
    ..2..........JH.Kallis..742.(935,742)
    ..3..........GS.Sobers..715.(938,715)
    ..4...........AW.Greig..702.(750,702)
    ..5..........CL.Cairns..699.(699,734)
    ..6....Shakib.Al.Hasan..694.(694,705)
    ..7..........KR.Miller..681.(681,862)
    ..8.........DL.Vettori..672.(672,681)
    ..9.........TL.Goddard..659.(659,794)
    .10.........Imran.Khan..650.(650,922)
    .11...........W.Rhodes..646.(646,823)
    .12.........A.Flintoff..645.(645,810)
    .13........BM.McMillan..642.(703,642)
    .14........GA.Faulkner..639.(877,639)
    .15..........SR.Watson..633.(729,633)
    .16..........Moeen.Ali..633.(655,633)
    .17...........R.Benaud..623.(623,863)
    .18...........GE.Gomez..618.(618,693)
    .19..........TE.Bailey..607.(607,744)
    .20..........Kapil.Dev..598.(598,877)

Incidentally, it doesn't change much if you insist that both ratings are taken on the same date, except for the odd player like Rhodes who was hardly bowling at his peak batting date: Botham stays top on 761; Vettori drops to 13th and Flintoff takes his place in the top 10.

Since taking sums instead of products has also been suggested, here's the date-specific top 20 for that. Hadlee does indeed go up a fair bit, but is still below Benaud (though not Greig):

    ..1.........GS.Sobers..1651..1967-01-04
    ..2.........IT.Botham..1620..1980-02-19

    ..4.........KR.Miller..1522..1952-01-29
    ..5........Imran.Khan..1483..1983-01-18
    ..6..........R.Benaud..1480..1959-11-17
    ..7..........R.Ashwin..1444..2016-11-29
    .=8........SM.Pollock..1438..2003-08-18
    .=8.........RJ.Hadlee..1438..1987-04-20
    .10........A.Flintoff..1429..2005-11-16
    =11.......AK.Davidson..1427..1961-01-03
    =11.......GA.Faulkner..1427..1911-01-11
    =11..........AW.Greig..1427..1975-03-04

Just about every one near the top of the test list is a frontline bowler, but there are a number of bowlers who get near the top without being frontline batsmen. This is exaggerated on the cumulative rankings with a lot of the players near the top being the best bowlers.

The odi list is extremely surprising

ODI list is surprising. Gayle and Shastri are above likes of Watson and Jayasuriya..

Huh, never knew about this, I guess it was a fair decision to pick him in the first ATG ODI XI.
