I gave up even trying to rationalize IPL bidding about 10 years ago. My only theory is there's a marketing aspect to it where Australian players create more of a following and hence a more valuable product. For over a decade now, 2nd and 3rd tier Aussie players have been more sort after than 1st tier players from other nations, when many of them clearly aren't as good.

Quite often these players get picked up after the auction through some sort of agreement.... think that happened with Hash last year.

Sometimes it feels like teams would rather let players slip through the cracks and avoid a bidding war and then sign them up as injury replacements or whatever. Amla a recent example of that

tbf, this was exclusively teams bidding up the price to make SRH pay a ****load with their Right-to-Match Card. Never in doubt where he was ending up, it was just how big a dent the others could make into SRH's budget.

Root won't be available throughout the tournament and he's not explosive enough like Stokes to warrant big bucks. He's the kind of batdman you build your middle order around in T20s and his lack of availability in the later stages means he will never go for top dollar.
