Even a long tail is fine as long as you can keep the opposition teams down and out with quick/early wickets.

Akram was handy with the bat at 8 anyway.Warne is not going to make a substantial difference with the bat anyway.

Muralitharan though without a reputation as a batsman whatsoever, managed to sneak in some wins for SL.

2010 win Vs Aus.Massive partnership for the 9th wicket between Mathews and Malinga, it was Murali who provided the finishing touches.

A Tri series final Vs Bangladesh, Murali scored 33 runs and remained not out.

We're talking about selecting the best world XI in history. They should be able to bat down to at least 9. Garner and McGrath are both genuinely poor batsmen. A tail of Garner, McGrath, Murali is really bad. It's not like tests where you need to take 20 wickets. Your bowlers are only getting 10 overs each. Picking a fractionally worse bowler is a lot better if they offer a lot more worth the bat.

The way this is going it's possible the A team will have a better balanced side. Hadlee, Warne, Waqar and Ambrose is a much healthier looking tail and doesn't sacrifice a lot with the ball.

Turn it up. I'm arguing entirely about balance here.

If the openers had been voted for first and Jaya/Tendulkar had have been picked I'd be arguing for Dhoni as keeper if everyone had been picking Gilly.

ODI teams are very finely balanced and need to bat down to 9. If Wasim was Pollock quality with the bat then maybe you could get away with having 3 number 11s but he really isn't.

We saw yesterday that a team that bats deep can apply pressure even if they are 5/8 in the early overs.

The other fat bowling option that springs to mind is Hadlee. Better with the ball than Pollock but not quite as good with the bat.

You seriously can't be arguing for Warne for batting depth. Averaged 13 and scored exactly 1 fifty. Pollock (14 fifties, 1 hundred) over McGrath would be a better argument. Try that.
