Vernon Philander transformation

Many people talk about Steve Smith transformation from an average leggie to world best batsmen in current times but everyone seems to ignore Philander's transformation to becoming SA's best bowler in current times from being an average all rounder.Good thing is that he has mantained his batting unlike Smith who is now a useless and worse bowler than what he was at his debut

Philander was always rated quite highly, he was/is the default leader of the attack when Steyn is injured.

He picked up 50 wickets in his first 7 test matches, and now has 182 after 48 tests. So if he's not taking wickets at the same rate he did at the start of his career, does that mean he's got worse? :D

Well he did kinda make his debut in 2007 in an otherwise forgotten ODI series against India known more for Tendulkar getting a bunch of 90s which ultimately led to him not getting the prized 50 centuries in each format but not sure if it counts as much of a transformation as he only played a few games

What transformation? OP needs to have a look at his record before he even made the test side. His record at First class level is phenomenal.

Philander was the second best bowler in the world before he even played a Test match. Transformation is non-existent.

Bahseph

State Captain
He was picked in the wrong format in 2007. Admittedly Pollock was still around so getting into the Test team would have been a tad trickier. He can be useful in LO cricket but it's long form games where he can win it for you singlehandedly with the ball, and chip in with good scores with the bat.

FC records of SA players are greatly exaggerated due to the fact that both State cricket and franchise cricket of SA has got FC status and State cricket is of lower quality where teams like Namibia compete

And yet his record was still comfortably well ahead of any other SA player at the time. And not due to their second division shenanigans.

Means he has spells on the pies then goes to a double d.

There's not really been any transformation. Philander was always awesome.

Haha ya, transformation is in the brain of the OP who has recently found out about Philander's awesomeness.

Philander started off as a top, line and length bowler and has maintained that quality. Apart from his physique, not much has transformed.

Philander wasn't someone I knew very much about on his test debut, but if you look at his record for the Cape Cobras around those couple of seasons it was seriously impressive.

11-12: 16 wickets at 16.84
10-11: 35 wickets at 16.11
09-10: 45 wickets at 14.73

Even on seam friendly domestic pitches, that is a truly remarkable record
