Mangongo unveils Zimbabwe U19 World Cup squad

Zimbabwe under 19 coach Stephen Mangongo thanked the country’s cricket board (ZC) for their help as he unveiled the squad to take part in the under 19 World Cup to be held in New Zealand early next year.

The limited-overs tournament is scheduled to be held in New Zealand from 13 January to 3 February 2018.

Mangongo announced Zimbabwe’s 15-man squad, captained by Liam Roche, and five non-travelling reserves.

The coach said the final squad was selected following a rigorous two-year programme that included trials, several training camps and tours to Malaysia, Namibia, South Africa, Australia and India by the youth side.

Mangongo explained: “The boys have had a long journey which started with 88 boys from the 10 provinces and the two-year programme has been very intense and rigorous.”

“It is an honour to have worked with such kind of boys who cherish and have a dream to eventually represent their nation at the highest level.

“These boys are living a dream and hopefully in a few years’ time, or a few months’ time, we will see some of them graduating into higher levels of cricket.”

Mangongo expressed his gratitude to ZC for giving him the resources he requested to ensure the team would be well prepared for the ICC Under-19 World Cup tournament.

He said: “As the coach, I would like to thank ZC because this had never happened that an Under-19 side goes through such rigorous preparations.”

Zimbabwe finished 10th at the last Under-19 World Cup, in Bangladesh in 2016, but Mangongo is confident his charges will do much better this time round.

He said: “We are definitely looking to ensure we keep improving because these boys eventually must take Zimbabwe to the promised land. It’s not an option for us to go backwards.”

James Taylor and Steve Rhodes to support Young Lions

Former England players James Taylor and Steve Rhodes to coach Young Lions in Desert Springs Resort in Spain

James Taylor will link up with Steve Rhodes in a new-look Young Lions coaching team this weekend at a new venue – the Desert Springs Resort in southern Spain.

Taylor, who has done some brief coaching stints with the England Under-19s set-up since his playing career was cut short in early 2016, has been appointed batting coach for the first half of the Young Lions’ winter programme – which continues with a Tri-Series in South Africa also including Namibia, as all three teams continue preparations for the ICC Under-19s World Cup in New Zealand in January.

Rhodes, the former Worcestershire and England wicketkeeper who is now one of the longest-serving and most-respected coaches in the county game, will take charge of the Young Lions ahead of that World Cup campaign – having agreed to join on a short-term basis following Andy Hurry’s appointment as director of cricket at Somerset.

Hurry and Rhodes will both attend the four-day training camp in Desert Springs, before Rhodes takes over for the Tri-Series in South Africa.

“I can’t wait to get started,” said Taylor. “I did some work with the Young Lions at their first camp of the winter in Loughborough, and I liked what I saw. I’m looking forward to the chance of getting to know them better in Spain and then South Africa, and hopefully helping them with their game.

“Andy Hurry has been fantastic getting me involved in the programme, and now it’s going to be great to have the chance to work with Steve Rhodes. He’s had so much experience and a lot of success with his county, both in terms of winning promotion and in the number of young talented players they bring through.

“I think for both of us, the aim will be to create an enjoyable atmosphere for the players, starting in Spain this weekend. I’ve heard good things about Desert Springs – it will be nice to get some sun on our backs.”

Neil Killeen, the former Durham seamer who has been a regular on ECB programmes in recent years, will be the Young Lions fast bowling coach for the winter.

Gloucestershire head coach Richard Dawson will work with the spinners in Spain and South Africa, linking up with Steve Griffin, the long-serving physio at Bristol who recently joined the ECB.
Young Lions squad

Ethan Bamber (Middlesex), Liam Banks (Warwickshire), Tom Banton (Somerset, wk), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Jack Davies (Middlesex, wk), Adam Finch (Worcestershire), Luke Hollman (Middlesex), Will Jacks (Surrey), Tom Lammonby (Somerset), Felix Organ (Hampshire), Dillon Pennington (Worcestershire), Savin Perera (Middlesex), Jack Plom (Essex), Hamidullah Qadri (Derbyshire), Tom Scriven (Hampshire), Prem Sisodiya (Glamorgan), Fin Trenouth (Somerset), Roman Walker (Glamorgan).

SOUTH AFRICA

ricket South Africa (CSA) on Tuesday announced the South Africa Under-19 squad that will take on England and Namibia in a five-match Youth One-Day International (ODI) triangular series from November 30 to December 10 in Potchefstroom.

Thando Ntini - the son of Proteas great Makhaya - has been included.

The series will be one of the last opportunities for selectors to have a look at possible picks ahead of the ICC Under-19 World Cup due to take place in New Zealand in early 2018.

Raynard van Tonder will captain the young team for the second time and is looking forward to another opportunity to lead from the front and hopes to come out on top this time around. The youngsters fell two runs short of victory in the final of their five-match series against the West Indies in June of this year, ultimately losing the series 3-2 to the defending champions.

“It was really hard to accept the series loss in Durban against the Windies, but there’s been a lot of cricket since then and even more growth and not just by me, but by the team as well,” Van Tonder commented.

“I’m really looking forward to captaining the boys again, I enjoyed stepping into the leadership position and learned a lot. Now I want to take all those lessons and put them into this upcoming triangular series.

“The guys are excited and I’m also really excited, England and Namibia are tough competitors and it’s exactly what we need building up to the World Cup.”

Coach, Lawrence Mahatlane believes that they have found the right balance as well as the sweet spot between youth and experience and is looking forward to seeing how this team goes about the lessons learned from the Windies tour.

“I’m really happy with the squad that has been put together by the selection panel,” he said.

“I feel we’ve got the right personnel for all the different scenarios and a group of really fired up youngsters. The series is going to be another tough task for the guys and the way we apply ourselves and our skills will be the key.

“There’s obviously a lot to play for, considering that we leave for the Under-19 World Cup in the first week of January next year, but for me right now, it’s about winning this series and making sure that we’ve laid the right groundwork for the tests that are still to come before we head out.”

The coach is optimistic of his team’s chances in the triangular and is pleased with the hunger shown by individuals during camps held in the last few months.

“It bodes well for the team. I’ve seen how hungry they are when we get together for our sessions and the positive direction they have taken in the intervening months. It makes me really excited to see what they will bring to the party against the strong England and Namibian sides,” he concluded.
South Africa Under-19s Youth ODI squad:

AUSTRALIA

Preliminary squad for U19 World Cup named
Australia select 28 players in initial squad for showpiece Under-19 ICC event to be held in New Zealand early next year

Some tough decisions await Cricket Australia's Youth Selection Panel over the next six weeks, as competition for spots heats up for the 2018 Under 19 Cricket World Cup.
A preliminary squad of 28 players has been revealed for the showpiece ICC event, to be held in New Zealand from January 13 to February 3, selected by the YSP in conjunction with State Talent Managers.

Selection in the final squad is set to be determined by performances at the Under 19 National Championships to be played in Hobart and Launceston from December 4 to 15.

Headlining the squad is Western Australia all-rounder Cameron Green, who took the Sheffield Shield by storm last summer as a 17-year-old, including five wickets in his maiden innings and 12 wickets across three matches at the remarkable average of 18.5.

Six players in the squad have played in the JLT One-Day Cup over the past two summers; recent Victoria debutant Will Sutherland, 2017 CA XI representatives Max Bryant, Jonathan Merlo and Param Uppal (this year), and 2016 CA XI reps Xavier Bartlett and Jason Sangha.

Sutherland, a first-year Bushrangers rookie, and fellow Victorian Ed Newman recently chose not to nominate for this year's AFL draft to pursue a career in cricket.

Another multi-talented Victorian, Zak Evans, was rookie-contracted by the Bushrangers ahead of this season. He would have been eligible for next year's AFL draft.

With 15 available spots for the World Cup, players named in the extended squad of 28 are in pole position. However, players not in this squad may be considered with exceptional performances between now and mid-December.

"There's some exceptional talent coming through the Pathway right now, and it really is going to be a tough task to narrow down our Under 19 World Cup squad to just 15 players," CA Pathways Manager Graham Manou said.

"In this preliminary squad, we have a really good balance of batting and bowling talent and plenty of players with strong all-round capabilities, including guys like Cameron Green, Will Sutherland and Param Uppal, who have all had a taste of domestic cricket in the past 12 months.

"These players have been identified by the State Talent Managers over their efforts at previous events – the Under 19 international series against Sri Lanka in April, last summer's Under 17 and Under 19 National Championships, Rookie Camps and performances at club and Premier Cricket.

"That said, there are some really good players not in this preliminary squad – and there is nothing stopping them from pushing into the World Cup squad.

"Representing Australia is a huge honour, and the next six weeks is about our Under 19 players continuing to put strong performances on the board to push their case for selection, culminating with the Under 19 National Championships in Tasmania in early December."

All bar one member of the Australia Under 19 side which enjoyed a strong series win against Sri Lanka Under 19s in Hobart in April feature in the squad.

With wicketkeeper Lewin Maladay ineligible due to age, glovemen Matthew Gilkes, Baxter Holt and Patrick Rowe have the front-running.

Rowe, 16, is the youngest member of the preliminary squad and represented Victoria Country at the Under 17 National Championships earlier this month.

Bushrangers rookie Mitchell Perry – another multi-talented Victorian sportsman - has been ruled out of contention for the World Cup due to injury, as has fellow Victorian fast bowler Sam Elliott and New South Wales batting all-rounder Tom Sowden.

The final squad will have Matthew Elliott as coach and Ryan Harris as assistant coach, with the duo to keep a close on the Under 19 National Championships alongside the Youth Selection Panel.
Both will be involved with the CA XI at the Under 19 tournament, with their roles reversing as Harris takes the reins.
Australia Under 19 World Cup preliminary squad: Iain Carlisle, Matthew Gilkes, Jason Sangha (ACT/NSW Country); Jack Edwards, Ryan Hackney, Ryan Hadley, Baxter Holt, Lawrence Neil-Smith, Param Uppal, Austin Waugh (NSW Metro); Xavier Bartlett, Max Bryant, Mitchell Connolly, Blake Edwards, Harrison Macoun, Nathan McSweeney, Harrison Wood (QLD); Thomas O'Connell, Lloyd Pope (SA); Jarrod Freeman (TAS); Patrick Rowe (VIC Country); Zak Evans, Jonathan Merlo, Edward Newman, Will Sutherland (VIC Metro); Cameron Green, Bradley Hope, Matthew Spoors (WA)
WEST INDIES

The Selection Panel of Cricket West Indies has announced a 21-member Windies Under-19 squad for a two-week training camp from December 5 to 20 in Barbados and Antigua:

All but two of the players that were part of the successful trip to southern Africa in July have been included in the squad which also includes seven players whose performances during the recent Regional Under-19 Tournament in St. Kitts enhanced their claims for consideration.

The new inclusions are: Brad Barnes, Kishawn Graham, Jarion Hoyte, Aaron Maniram, Kimani Melius, Regional U19 3-Day Most Valuable Player Ashmeade Nedd and Regional U19 Super50 MVP Raymond Perez.

On the squad, Courtney Browne, chairman of the CWI selection panel, said: “As the build up to the 2018 ICC Youth World Cup continues, the development of our Under-19 players is paramount.

“The upcoming strategic camp will again give the coaching staff another opportunity to enhance and fine-tune the players’ skills and focus on team work, as we set out on our quest to defend the ICC Youth World Cup title.”

Browne added: “The addition of players from the recent Regional U19 Tournament to the camp squad will complement the team that was so successful two months ago in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

“These additional players were chosen to strengthen those positions in the squad that we felt needed attention.”

The players will assemble in Barbados, where they will undergo fitness testing, before travelling to Antigua in order to complete the training programme using the Coolidge Cricket Ground.

It will be their final preparation in the Caribbean before travelling to the ICC Youth World Cup to be staged from January 13 to February 3 next year in New Zealand.

Windies Under-19s are the defending ICC Youth World Cup champions, having lifted the title for the first time ever last year in Bangladesh, under the leadership of Shimron Hetmyer and guidance of head coach Graeme West.

Looking back 2008 was a very frustrating one for SA. Getting to the final which had a team people expected things from. The team had the likes of JJ Smuts, Pieter Malan, Reeze Hendricks, Rilee Rossouw, Jonathan Vandiar, Yaseen Vallie, Obus Pienaar and Wayne Parnell. Even had what was dubbed the best keeper (Barnes), best fielder (Engelbrecht) & fastest bowler (Arnold) but I would say none of them kicked on to be big parts of the SA team like some of the names you mentioned above did for their national teams.

Dave Miller missed out on the squad unbelievably. Remember Ray saying how close it was that he missed out. One of the rare one's he 'got wrong' which you can't say really.

The 2000 one seemed to have a large number of known players but maybe not the best of the best.

Would have thought Prithvi Shaw would continue playing Indian domestic cricket given how well he is going. Gonna be a higher standard than an u19 WC. Guess they'll balance it up against the experience of playing in NZ, and how much India want to win the competition.

England look weaker than previous editions. Not a whole lot of county experience.

Emmanuel Stewart to lead WI U-19s in World Cup - ESPNcricinfo

Wicketkeeper-batsman Emmanuel Stewart and batsman Kirstan Kallicharan have been named captain and vice-captain respectively of the West Indies Under-19s squad for the upcoming 2018 World Cup in New Zealand. Both players were part of the squad that won the title in 2016: Stewart did not play a match, while Kallicharan was picked for only two games.

Nine players in the 15-man squad were part of the team that toured South Africa and Zimbabwe for limited-overs series in July this year. West Indies U-19s won both series, beating South Africa U-19s 3-2 and Zimbabwe U-19s 2-1. Bhaskar Yadram, the 18-year-old Guyana batsman, was the leading run-getter for West Indies U-19s on that tour, while left-arm spinner Jeavor Royal was the joint-highest wicket-taker for the side, with 12 dismissals. Left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop, who also took 12 wickets on the tour, has been named one of the three reserve players, along with Brad Barnes and Javier Spencer.

The team and the reserves will participate in an 11-day training camp in St Kitts and Nevis. The team is scheduled to depart on December 28 and will undergo a one-week training camp in New Zealand prior to the start of the tournament. West Indies U-19s are in Group A, alongside South Africa, New Zealand and Kenya, and will begin their title defence against the hosts on January 13. The top two teams from the four groups will advance to the Super League, while the remaining eight teams will feature in the Plate competition, with the final scheduled for February 3.

West Indies U-19s coach Graeme West admitted the side was younger than the team that went to Bangladesh but backed the team's established batting group.

"It's an exciting time for these guys, now that they've discovered they're going to be going to a World Cup," West said. "It's a bit of a younger side than the last one we took to Bangladesh. However, we have a very established, experienced batting group, with the likes of Kirstan Kallicharan and Emmanuel Stewart who went to the last World Cup."

Kirstan Kallicharan, one to watch out for in the future. Is he related to Alvin? I think Alvin now must be nearly 60 and last time I was in UK he was still playing club cricket and scoring runs too :-)

Will Jacks, heard a lot about him. Looks like he's based his batting on KP. Not a bad idol I'd say to emulate.

Typical Kiwi cricketer. No airs about him, just do what is required for the team. Great to see HDCC/HIBS clothing to go with it. Very much a Hutt lad.
