Best Team of 1970 to 1990 Vs Best Team of 1990 to 2010

Im stiĺ trying to get my head round an aussie picking s waugh ahead of kallos
Firstly, I'm not Aussie.

My point still stands.
The big diff between the 2 teams is that the 70's+ team oozes players with leadership qualities whilst the 90's+ team lacks such.

Whenever you pick XI's try to do so, not on paper, but on the playing field.

Thus, I pick Ponting and S.Waugh over Dravid and Kallis respectively.

Reasons why I think the 70s/80s team wins:

In general, the 70s/80s side seems more battle hardened. They went through WSC and an era with no helmets. I think their top five is much more likely to combat the opposite pace attack than the 90s/2000s team. Hayden, Sehwag and even Lara were noticeably shaky against raw pace.

I advocate having Imran at 6 and a pace attack of Lillee/Hadlee/Marshall/Imran which would overwhelm the opposite team in most situations.

Ambrose, McGrath and Akram are formidable. But McGrath and Ambrose were control freaks and I dont think they will feast on a lack of patience from the opposite end, except Viv.

Of course, Warne may be a factor on a 4th innings or a spinning wicket, but outside of that I just think that while the 90s/2000s team looks more well-rounded, they seem less lethal.

I'd back the 1990 to 2010 team to win as they'd have an ATG spinner and Gilchrist.

You know, I used to pick Warne over Murali as well, but over time I realise what a freak Murali was. He's arguable the GOAT bowler. Warne was always so much more entertaining and had that air of magic about him, and then he was useful with the bat and good in the slips, so that's usually why I picked him, but realistically Murali should be the first bowler on the team sheet.

Or play them both IMO. Plenty of great seam bowling allrounders in history to choose from. If you're limiting it to 1990s onwards pick Kallis to bat at 3.

No, you need Imran there, he was the player of the 80s...
He arguably was, but it's that age old argument when picking an ATG XI of whether you pick the best players...or the best team. If I'm looking for my very best team, I'd def being considering whether the likes of Hadlee, Marshall & Lillee were all slightly better bowlers than Imran, then I'd look at my strong batting line-up and ask if I really need him at 7 or 8 with the bat, at the expense of the likes of a Hadlee, even though he was clearly a better batsmen than Hadlee. Not saying i'd definitely go that way, but I can see that could be a reason for omitting him.

If I was however purely picking the best players, as opposed to team, Imran would be one of the first names penciled in for sure.

Put Imran at 6 and you solve the problem and have an unbeatable bowling lineup.

That top 3 Sehwag, Hayden and Lara I find quite vulnerable options against the likes of Marshall, Lillee, Hadlee and Imran...if the pitch has little bit in it, how many times do you think Sehwag will survive the first 10 overs? I also had him in my team, but on a second thought, I am not quite sure anymore...You have neither Ponting nor Dravid in your side, that's interesting, but they are good players against fast and swing bowling respectively...Against a bowling line up of that caliber, you got to give your best shot...What about this, make Dravid open the innings (not that he never opened, has 4 centuries in 12 matches with an average of 42.47) with either Smith or Hayden, and bring Ponting at 3, keep Lara for 5...
Hayen-Dravid-Ponting or Smith-Dravid-Ponting gives me a little more relief and some protection for the middle order...

I would not prefer Border over Procter but I like your other point of having Imran at 6 and Hadlee at 7, that makes it almost an impossible bowling line up, forget about decades, it looks as good as any
Seriously? Imran 6, Hadlee 7 is a ridiculously weak middle order and assuming 8-11 are all worse batsmen that makes the batting line-up far too short.

yeah so your option is to have a specialist batsman at 6 and go with 4 genuine bowlers or is it Botham at 6? both ways it's good option, I have no problem with either, but 6 and 7 is not really middle order, in the middle order in my team you have Pollock and Chappell, anyways, my argument is with Gavaskar, Barry, Vivian, Chappell and Pollock you may afford the luxury of playing Imran and Hadlee, and I do not believe that makes it a "ridiculously weak" batting line up. And by the way, Alan Knott by any stretch of imagination can not be termed a "worse batsman" with more than 4000 test runs at an average of 32.75 and 5 centuries...

Now we'll have ten pages of 'is Matt Hayden a flat track bully' stuff. Well done Redhill as always
Glib from Gob, as always.

My pleasure btw.

And there's no need for ten pages, he was.

None of Imran, Hadlee or Knott are worthy of batting 6. Knott and Imran are 7s at best and Hadlee is an 8.

Putting any of them at 6 makes the tail look very long in an ATG scenario.

Imran Khan averaged 54.66 batting at five and 61.86 batting sixth, albeit only 27 innings from 126.

I am a big believer in having 5 proper bowling options in test cricket to win matches. Having a bowling all-rounder at no.6 is not completely untenable, India does it now with Ashwin and England did it with Flintoff and it worked well.

It's a trade off. You lose some batting strength but having Imran at no.6 grants you a 4-man all-time great pace attack that would rip through any opposition. Its not like Imran was a fluke, he was a proper lower order specialist. A normal bat like Border though at no.6 reduces you to 3 pacers and spinner and puts the 70/80s team at a disadvantage since 90s/2000s already has Kallis as fifth bowling support and a longer batting lineup with Gilchrist at 7.

I back the 70s/80s top 5 against the 90s/2000s top 5 already, and a tail of Hadlee, Knott, Marshall is not chump change.

Granted, in a regular ATG normal lineup I would have Imran at 7, but thats because Sobers would be comfy at 6.
