Is Hashim Amla an ATG?

RK_123

A batting AVG close to 50 in both tests and ODIs and performance in all conditions and against all kinds of bowling attack.

Do you think he is an ATG or even the best batsmen of his era?

Discuss!

I mean this could just be another thread where people spend time arguing about the extremely loose definition of the term 'ATG', or it could be a thread about beard memes.

Post your beard memes.

If Sanga is an ATG then Amla is too
Sanga started off as a WK and ended his career as a pure batsman with a remarkable average of 57+ in Test cricket.
For a player to have initially shouldered the burdens of WKeeping and still end up with such a high average is ATG standout material.

Amla needs to standout and be remembered somehow.

Yeah Amla should have played on the roads of Sri Lanka to boost his average and then he could have been considered an ATG.

Compare Statsguru for both.
KS average is higher / equal in 6 other countries over his average in SLanka. His total away average is 53. If batting in SLanka was so easy then others should have similar high averages, yet no other SLankan batsman matches his feats. His batting in itself could qualify for ATG status. Throw in his glove work and it cements his position as an ATG.

Amla is an easy ATG batsman given his exploits in both formats, he is not an ATG cricketer though.

Great player but still wouldn’t nudge into SA all time XI IMO. That said he’d make a NZ or SL all time XI probably so he’s near enough to an ATG

Perhaps a handy definition of world ATG would be “would make NZ ATG XI”?

His test achievements deserve serious acclaim, bossed it for one of the best test sides of the last 20 years, just a shame he could never do it in knock out limited overs competitions which hurts his legacy sadly.

Setting a very low bar for ATG spinners....
Could make it "would make a SL ATG XI" .... but then it becomes tough on the spinners and easy for the pacers.

On the mighty Hash... his next 3 to 4 years will determine his ATG status, if he does a Sanga and pushes his game back into the best of the best in the world then I would give him a place in the SA XI and could argue his ATG status...

Can’t see him slotting into SA AT XI with Kallis and Pollock at 3/4 pretty locked in imo

If you needed could drop Kallis and Pollock to 4/5, that would threaten Faulkner`s position at 6... with Proctor at 7 how many allrounders do you need? But let him get to that status before the argument/discussion even starts!

For me part of being an ATG is that you remember them for stunning individual performance rather than statistics - thus Amla's numbers are not too different from Brian Lara's, but the difference is Lara is an ATG in any currency, Amla only in Rand

Amla's played tons of really memorable innings. The 196 at Perth possibly his most glorious.

Obviously comparing anyone with Lara on that aspect is unfair and just a bit silly.
