Pin Tendulkar's fail on one bowler or team collapse

Victor Ian

International Coach
Tendulkar missed out on being the first, and perhaps only ever, player to have played a career long enough to have seen a million runs scored, by only 355 runs. Surely, during his illustrious career there is one shining example of an extraordinary bowling performance or team collapse that we can assuredly conclude cost Tendulkar a million runs.

Was it McGrath at Lords in 97. Probably not - I don't think England would have made 432 if McGrath was absent.
Was it Australia's measly 118 in the first test of that series. Perhaps - both they and England scored over 400 in the other innings in that test.

So basically, let's find even better candidates to blame this farce on.

Had he not hung on for as far past his sell-by date as he did, he wouldn't have come that close TBH.

Are you counting total runs scored in all forms of the game from 1989 upto Nov. 2013?

No - just tests - During Tendulkar's test career, there were 999645 runs scored in test cricket. That is some stat - In a way it is Bradmanesque in him being just short of a magical number. I'm surprised that the billion Indian fans, and millions others around the world, never made this a 'thing' to be achieved, such as making it to 200 tests.

You wouldn't wager on Tufnell taking 11 wickets in a match against 1997 era Australia too often

We can blame Tendulkar for skipping India's tour of the West Indies in 2011.
Doesn't matter - the near million is all runs scored from 89 to 13. Unless you mean that Tendulkar would have scored 355 more runs than his replacement.

You should find a way of contacting Sachin and tell him though.......reckon he'd be gutted.

Cook is only at 528553 runs. He kind of needs to play almost as long again, as he already has. This thing needs nothing more than a very long career. Even a bowler could do it.
