Haha....55 poles at 19 last year, took his wickets at 27s this series in a complete shambles of a side v a much better batting line up than the Aussies had to bowl to, 523 career wickets...

He's in. He's an ATG whose numbers will stack up better than any of the Aussie bowlers when it's all said and done.

As always completely off the point.

Have to take into account the performances of the bowling unit though. We were absolutely thumped in this series. Broad was dreadful, our 'spinner' probably put in one of the worse series perfomances you'll ever see, and did we even have a 3rd seamer? Yet he still managed to bowl with an average of 27 and an ER of around 2. Quite remarkable really. Have to reason that with better support he would have taken more wickets.
Was he even actually that bad? He just lacked penetration, it's not like he was bowling full tosses and long hops every over. He wasn't any worse than most spinners in these conditions, the Aussies just really played him better. At most you could say he wasn't getting as much grip and bite as he usually does.

btw the arguments in this thread have just gone around in circles about a dozen times. We're not going to get anything new.

For overseas tours easily, he would be the most effective fast bowler in Asian conditions with reverse swing on offer.

Whether Anderson would make it to an Australian side is a totally different conversation to comparing Anderson with Hazelwood/Starc/Cummins etc with career stats and averages. But I don't think this thread was created with any intention of sincerely exploring the first question which would have been about the effectiveness and select-ability of swing bowlers in Australia. We would then look at other swing bowlers who Australia might have picked in the past and compare with Anderson to get an idea.

But this thread was created to make fun of Anderson and to feel superior about the Australian attack and say "your best bowler would not make it to our Tasmanian side". This is happened before as well with other players like Shakib.

Tbh I can't see Shakib getting into the Tas 1st XI ahead of Clive Rose, Beau Webster or Tom Rogers. Even if he played as a specialist batsman it would be a toss up between him and Jake Doran, and Doran's been in fine form

100% right. And this (along with all the other threads) all popped up here right after James Anderson crossed the 500 test wicket mark, and all with the same intention of hanging **** on one of the great bowlers to have played the game who had just achieved an incredible milestone.

Nah it was a genuine thread with thought to the at the time up and coming ashes. But of you want to interpret it that way go right ahead.

Turns out that it was a very fair question to ask, given the output of all the bowlers.

Glenn McGrath would not make it to Pakistan XI in the 90s. Pakistani selectors and management just don't rate medium pacers who can't reverse the old ball and who relies on movement off the seam. The natural length of Pakistani fast bowlers is a much fuller length than McGrath's natural length and they rely on movement in the air to get the batsman out bowled or lbw. McGrath relies mostly on caught behind or slips. Pakistan don't have slips nor does the ball carry off edges. There is low bounce, no movement off the pitch, no pace off the track. You have to generate it with your action. As far as output is concerned, McGrath averaged 30 in Pakistan, where Wasim and Waqar were averaging 21-22.

The only time Pakistan picked medium pacers were under a foreign coach - Asif/Woolmer and Abbas/Arthur.

And knowing how the domestic sides picked their teams too, even Abbotabad XI would probably not pick him as they are obsessed with raw pace.

Despite the C9 coverage of cricket, it is actually an international sport played in various parts of the world so it evolves in various different ways. Different cultures/environments and conditions develop different set of skills and athletes as a product of those conditions. Wasim perfected reverse swing because that was bowled/lbw was the best way to be successful in Pakistan. McGrath developed his natural length and movement off the seam because getting people caught behind was the most effective way of getting them out in Australia.

I have literally not seen any other fan base on this forum ask questions like "Would Ponting make it to Indian middle order of Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman" just to put down Ponting. There is only fan base that repeatedly asks these question based on the assumption that Australian conditions are at the epi-centre of cricket and skill set suited in Australia are superior to all other skill sets in the world.
