I think this could be interesting to try

Renshaw
Warner
Usman
Smith
Maxwell
Handscombe +
Pattinson
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazelwood

All depends on whether Handscombe is up to the job. Surely it's easier to keep on flat aussie tracks to a pace quartet than to 3-4 tandem spinners in India though
That is a collapse prone order IMO. Maxwell needs to be replaced by a proper bat.

I wonder if they'll consider Khawaja to open at home with Renshaws place on the line? I wouldn't do it but I could see it happening if the incumbent doesn't score heavy in the Shield games before Brisbane

He has done okay since his return so give him a few more matches

Everyone knows that it's rocks or diamonds but if Oz ever managed to be 4 for plenty, the opposition would be ****ting themselves if he came out to bat

To be fair, Maxwell's made a lot of his best knocks when Victoria's been in trouble. But he's also gone and backed himself to play aggressively in that situation. If it went wrong playing for Australia, the criticism that'd come would be super intense.

I certainly hope not.

Renshaw
Warner
Khawaja
Smith*
Handscomb
Maxwell
Nevill+
Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Hazlewood

Should be the lineup when all are fit.

I reckon Khawaja will attract spinners as soon as he walks to the crease though and he might get found out by it. If that happens in the first two tests then Cartwright should come in to replace him.

Shaun Marsh (Khawaja sucks, useless in SC)
Smith
Handscomb
Decent AUS mid order batsman other than Maxwell
Peter Neville
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood
Cummins
Why should being useless in SC have any bearing on the home summer?

Maxwell has hardly set the world on fire, but he's still looked a lot better than the bloke he replaced Mitch Marsh. The 25* will help him.

He was pretty unlucky in the first innings of this recent match, a bugger because on 38 you'd back him to go on. He just looks like getting out under 20 so often

It'll be a shoot out between maxwell and Cartwright for number six won't it? Reckon Cartwright's upside is better but maxwell will get first shot

Pretty much what I expect. Maxwell is/should probably ahead in the pecking order unless something crazy happens during the Shield rounds.

International Vice-Captain
Under Wade at his normal/better times, as he's probably good enough to play as a pure batsman when he's not being utterly fecal where Carey isn't.

Wade since the recall, I can see Carey only doing marginally better. If we want a specialist we may as well go for Nevill who may actually come around with the bat at some point and is just as tidy/tidier with the gloves.
A bit surprised at this. I haven't seen him live but 25.6 is a decent average and 59 catches in a season implies he is decent with the gloves.

with Agar and Patto in the wings.

I think O'Keefe's time is done, and Agar really impressed/surprised me. Second-spinner option if required.

The normal awards that everyone else has
Jake Lehmann (103 and 93) and Callum Ferguson (182* in the second innings) both getting some big runs vs the Vics.

Headline on cricinfo saying how Maxwell made two 50s. 8-)

Red

The normal awards that everyone else has
FWIW Bancroft's 76* and 86 opening for WA against NSW should be considered pretty highly, considering the NSW attack was Starc, Hazelwood, Lyon and Cummins.

IF Bancroft is a reliable & promising keeper (FTR, I have no idea as have never seen him keep) then he should be picked as he is the best batsman by some distance and all the others have failed
