Could do worse than ask Stokes to bat in the top three - at least he seems to be willing to try and tough things out

We have got a long term option at 3. Hildreth does well all around the counties and more importantly does well at his home ground Taunton which is a big turning track. Get him in for Sri Lanka imo

He’s what 34? How is that a long term option? Not to mention that he doesn’t actually bat 3 for his county.

Was listening to the Podcast Cricinfo put together for Cook's farewell. Nick Compo was suggesting that Burns bat at 3, then a few minutes later that MO bat at 3. Seems to sum things up really.

MO at 3 for SL is not the worst idea. He seems decent against spin and the only real threat pace wise is Lakmal who is not that good against Left Handers. He's basically turns into the the Rashid of SL anyway after the 3rd over.

SL will probably play 3 spinners in Herath, Dilruwan and Akila D..2 off spinners there so that might be tricky for him.

His 33 which isn't old at all. If he did well and played for 2/3 years that is a long time in test cricket. Look at voges for the Aussies. Players often retire internationally at 33/34 as they have had 10 years plus travelling playing test spending months away at a time or to concentrate on t20 leagues. Neither issues hildreth would have

whats the latest on archer and being eligible for england?

the ecb would be f'ing stupid not to fast track him.
If they fast track him they might a well just get rid of the rule altogether. He's really a perfect example of why they have the rule, and getting rid of it at literally the first instance of it actually applying tp a player they would've selected if it didn't exist would make a complete joke of it.

I suppose part of the problem is how to build a top order that's right for SL but also has a prayer against Australia next summer, as the requirments could hardly be more different. Based on that, Stokes at 3 isn't the worst call as at least we know he can cut it at this level. Shame he's not a right-hander though.

Isn't it a 7 year process? It's excessive in the extreme.

What was fawad ahmed? 3 years?

Root would be fine at 3 imo but would need a bit of solidarity above him. That said, he’s just being a child when it comes to battling 3, he never wanted to. Bairstow doesn’t want the lack of the cuddly blanket that is the gloves. Root may have scored most of his runs at 4 but he was still coming in inside the 5th over so what’s the difference? Just get on with it and accept you’re not always in a purple patch.

Nah psychology plays a big part in sport, and especially so in cricket, Root isn't the first and won't be the last player who just can't bat in a possition that's not the one he's comfortable (Clarke is a good example of this, he averaged 60.80 batting in his prefered possiton of 5, yet only 30.61 at 4, and you can make the same argument that there's as little difference between batting at 4 or 5 as batting 3 or 4, though I would argue there's a bigger difference in batting at 3 as apposed to batting at 4 compared to 4 and 5).

Then he should see a specialist about that. If one position is really what affects him then perhaps he is not mentally strong enough to cope with that plus the captaincy.

Jennings now holds the joint longest streak for an English opener without a 50. 9 tests without a 50. No 50 at the Oval and he will set an all-time record for an English opener in tests for consecutive tests played without a 50. I would have picked Cook plus Burns for this game. In Sri Lanka I'd be looking at Burns plus one. Burns at one in black marker pen. The second best pick is hard and I am undecided. The ECB needs to think about their selection panel carefully with Jennings being selected again. It may be time for an immediate overhaul. Not debuting Burns at his home ground in the 5th test is unacceptable on many counts.

I think Jennings is inked in for Sri Lanka as he played spin so well in India on his debut. We may think he isn't up to it but they see something in him we don't.

It's been a pretty awful season for the fast bowlers. Barely anyone has enhanced their claims. Certainly most of the young bowlers (garton, mahmood, fisher, helm, coughlin, stone, topley) have done little to nothing.

Archer if he is available next year is a sure thing.

Otherwise from what I've seen

Fisher, Tongue and Brookes look the most likely to be truly test class and not just at home.

Then you have a list of english type seamers/swingers that might be angling for one spot when England play at home (unless they make massive strides) - Coad, Porter, COverton etc
It certainly has been. Only Porter has stayed fit for 99% of the season.

Olly Stone back knocking over div 2 batsmen ?

What you make of Tongue ? You include him in potential tests ? From what I have seen with his size he can be quicker but his approach and action doesn't look smooth and strong enough.
