When was the last time the England specialist batsmen put together a decent performances then, Cooky on MCG flatdecks not included?

Next week Roy and Hales as openers as Smith loves his T20 funksters.
Stupid as it sounds, would it actually be any worse at this stage?

Anything to get rid of the clueless giraffe.

I know he's old but surely Ian Bell isn't out of the equation for The Oval?

England have so many gaps and very few players to fill them at the moment! Still think Mitchell and Burns could do a job opening.

1. ???
2. ???
3. ???
4. Root
5. ???
6. Stokes
7. Bairstow

Best of the bad bunch really. Root out of form, Bairstow hardly flying and Stokes wildly inconsistent.

Still, where does that make Mo, Buttler, Pope etc fit in? You can't just raise these 6s and 7s to the higher positions because they are not those sorts of players. Bairstow is a good batter but he doesn't have a test match brain. Stokes' batting is wildly over-rated and without that freak not out score he'd probably average in the late 20s, he can't go higher. None of these so called amazing cricketers we have average anywhere near 40 in test cricket. I don't see any other alternative other than to try a series of new players and stick with them. But Mo isn't suddenly going to become a number 3, is he?

I think Mo should bat 3 with more focus on his batting. Buttler should play at 5 or **** off. Get Burns to open. What happened to Sam Robson?

Moeen
Root
???/Buttler
Bairstow
Stokes
Woakes
Curran
Broad
Anderson

will be my line-up.

He got dropped and his ability to score any runs even in county cricket vanished like it did with Lyth.

Currently stinking the place out in Div 2 with an average of 17 this season.
Surprising how so many of the English openers are going from hero to zero. Hameed, Compton, Robson, now Jennings and few others. Little similar to how it was for India before Sehwag and Gambhir came in.

I don’t think Buttler should be batting 5. Bairstow is a fine enough player to do the job he is asked to do. Ali at 3 would scare me unless a new partnership were found at it be somewhat adequate.

It's almost like being in the English set up ruins player's careers. I do wonder whether these things are not linked.

In that case, he should not be playing at all. Having a specialist batsman at number 7 is what Bangladesh does. Not the big 3/4 :)

Oh, agreed. England do not have that luxury. In my mind, Bairstow is fine at 7. And if there really aren't people coming through so we can try 2 new openers, a 3, a 5 then English cricket is in a lot of trouble and is being utterly carried by Curran or Woakes, sometimes Broad and always Anderson. I mean, what if Anderson decided he has had enough at the end of the series of all this rubbish? England are really f***'d.

Hildreth is England's best middle order batsman around the county scene. Never out of form. Should bat at 4/5 instead of people like Vince

Burns
Gubbins/Mitchell
Root
Hildreth
Clarke (Bell if he's not ready)
Stokes
Bairstow
Ali
Curran
Broad
Anderson

If need 2 spinners go Leech for Anderson/Broad to give them a winter break? Don't want to see Woakes near a plane. Think England need a new opening partnership rather than whoever's name isn't Cook no matter if he's outclassing Cook gets jetisoned all the time.100% convinced Rashid was just the poster boy to make people think that England aren't racist and just pick white people. Now Ali is back they can drop him next test.

I don't think I could handle watching burns bat every time England play. That head thing to mid wicket would drive me nuts

Burns 2018, 961 @ 64.07

The guy just keeps improving, and it's a joke that Jennings is still in the team ahead of him.
