Farewell - Retiring cricrate

viriya

International Captain
It's been a good 3+ years since I introduced cricrate and it has gone through a lot of iterations partly with suggestions from everyone here.

I've done much more than I planned to do, and it has given me a lot of insight into the game, improved my statistical and coding skills and even inspired me to make a career change to data science.

Lately I've found that I've lost my passion in constantly being involved in its development - partly because I think I've lost some passion for the game itself.

So I'm retiring cricrate as of today. I have hosting paid for a year so I'll let it run its course, but I don't plan to make any new updates.

For anyone interested in taking over from where I left off, I've made all the code (back-end and front) public:
https://github.com/chulaw/cricrate

The site's back-end is done in python with the front-end using PHP, Javascript and CSS. Sqlite is used for storage (those files not in GitHub). If anyone is comfortable with these languages and passionate about cricket and statistics - I'm happy to transfer ownership.

I intend on working on a different web project (not related to cricket or sport) that will take up the time that I save from not working on cricrate.

For those of you unfamiliar with the site's progress through the years, you can check the following threads:

http://www.cricketweb.net/forum/cri...ng-cricrate-blog-depth-detailed-articles.html

This also means that I will probably not be around the forums as much anymore - although I might drop in rarely.

In case I don't - this is a goodbye as well. I enjoyed my time here - thanks for all the support!

Actually pretty sad about this. I used cricrate alongside cricinfo to help me narrow down my top 25 ODI picks.

It was a good project. Thanks for your effort with it!

All the best Viriya, hopefully you will still post here.

Sad times. :(

I certainly didn't always agree with your methodology or your conclusions, but I thought it was awesome that someone was producing a regularly updated, professionally set out alternative to the awful ICC system, so I'm sad to see it go.

viriya, I admire your passion for keeping such a big task going for so long. It's a credit to you.

It would be pretty cool if CW could adopt and intergrate Cricrate into the site.

The methodology has come a long way and he's already taken a lot of our feedback on it. Plus if people are willing to continue working on it for the sake of having a community-driven alternative to ICC/Cricinfo, then it could be a useful addition.

Bring it up in the next podcast. :)

Viriya, echoing what others said here. I dont think there can ever be an universally acceptable cricket ratings system just because of the fact that cricket statistics are such heavy context driven contents, but what you did was nothing short of outstanding. To take time off your life to make an actual contribution to the cricketing community, while most of us just post our thoughts and do nothing else, is an absolute credit to your passion and hardwork. I do hope, as ***** said, that some of us with the right knowledge and inclination can take this up and keep it moving forward. Hope you do post around on CW and rediscover some of the passion for cricket. It is a great game, after all. All the best with everything you do mate. :)

Well no wonder blokes like Ian Harvey cracked the list. I kid, I kid.

Sad to see it go. It was by no means perfect but as Pews said, it was a very interesting alternative.

Would definitely be interested in learning more about the ML part of it. Been doing some casual reading on that recently.

I have never used it since I was not convinced by your explanations on how you did what you did but managing data in a coherent way for that long is a nightmare. Impressive effort.

Rashid Khan is ranked #3 so clearly this is a ranking system worthy of recognition.

It must have been a labour of love as I can see a lot of work has gone into this. Sad to see it end.

I couldn't easily find a way to DM you so I'm happy to take this message down if someone thinks it draws too much attention to it, but it's probably a good idea not to have you private key publicly accessible on github.

Maybe PEWS or someone could lock it up for now and then we will wait and see if someone comes forward to take over?
