Andre - who did you have in mind?

"His [Astle's] recall allows for the Black Caps to field their strongest batting line-up, potentially squeezing out an all-rounder."

Oram - no.
Cairns - no.
Styris - no.

Vettori?

Yup - Vettori is the obvious one.

IMO, Bond comes in for Mason and Astle for Vettori, unless the selectors choose to leave out McMillan or Papps - which wouldn't be a great move considering Bond, Martin, Cairns, Oram and Styris would be a handful in English conditions.

Thanks Andre.

From your article I thought you were just another one who wouldn't even dare mention Vettori's place being at risk! I think most of the sinister glances in NZ have shifted to Papps and Tuffey because of this conservative attitude in the media.

By the way, can you or someone else tell me why SA (without Boje) played specialist spinners in England in 4 of the 5 tests?

To me the 'variation' thing is all that will save Vettori, and without getting to see much cricket from England these days I was wondering just how important that factor will be there.

My starting lineup would be 1st test would be:

Richardson
Fleming
Styris
Astle
McMillan
Cairns
McCullum
Oram
Vettori
Bond
Martin

Even though I don't rate Vettori I don't see the need in going in with Tuffey as well. You have Bond/Martin opening the bowling, Oram first change, with Cairns/Styris/Astle/McMillan/Vettori your other bowlers.

McMillan definately won't be left out. He averaged 65 with the bat over the six tests this summer.

Heard that on the way to the supermarket this evening on Radio Sport :D

Basically it would have been the variation thing I assume - South Africa and New Zealand have fairly common 5 right arm seamer kind of thing going. I think if anything saves Vettori it will be that he is a spinner.

It's a tough day to get through 90 overs of just seamers - you fall well behind the over rate and people can't get a proper rest so I assume that was the only reason South Africa played a spinner in 4 of the matches.

That being said, I don't believe you should play a spinner for the sake of it when they are not up to the task. At the moment, I think it would be more of a hinderance for the Black Caps to play Vettori because he's just not penetrating.

I hope they will have Vettori out of the first choice squad. I think they will have McMillan and Astle switching places through the tour.
