Currently the University Week is on Game Day 3. Been a few disappointments from the big boys.

Got to feel for UKZN who play tier B so the region doesn't have a team.

Those playing.

UCT & UWC : No real stand-outs
Stellenbosch Uni : Kyle Simmonds, Brandon Glover, William Sendin
UPE : Matthew Christensen, Lutho Sipamla
UFS : Raynard van Tonder, Sean Whitehead
UJ : Ryan Rickelton, Muhammed Mayet
Tuks : Jiveshan Pillay, Ruben Hermann, Mitchell van Buuren, Thomas Kaber, Migael Pretorius, Ruben Trumpelmann, Ruan de Swardt

And you would be correct.

Dubbing themselves the Madibaz PE

Good to see some form with the bat today. .

Raynard van Tonder stroked 102 off 112 balls vs UWC
Marques Ackerman just struck 96. What I like about him is his ability to come in the middle order and naturally score quick and he runs well between the wickets,
Ryan Rickelton currently going mad in a 50 over game and is 114 not out off 72 balls vs UCT - like Ackerman a whippet between the stumps.
Jiveshan Pillay just gone to 50 (currently 53*) chasing 280 (Tuks still need 170 runs so can go big)
Janneman Malan got a 50 yesterday

With the ball Simmonds and Sipmala picked up 5-fors on one of the opening days. M. Pretorius playing his 1st game today so may have been released only now by Titans. Trumpelmann looks like a good young left-armer and de Swardt shown good all-round skills.

Jiveshan Pillay now 120 not out off 129 and still 50 runs to win.

Nice to see him and van Tonder getting these runs before the u19 series vs England/Namibia

Was thinking I could catch the Cobras game on Sunday when I have an off day (I stay equidistant between Newlands and Boland Park)... And it's being played in Oudtshoorn! Curse you SWD. 400km is a bit far to go for a S/S game!

Just a tad !

It is a nice little ground in Oudtshoorn but it just seems strange the whole move from Warriors to Cobras.

Maybe he failed the pencil test.

Where it gets a little silly for the Cobras is that they're only playing three white players (and I'm pretty sure that I remember teams in the past with even fewer than that). So they're doing an admirable job of selecting non-white players, so they're achieving the basic goal of quotas, but they struggle to select the right type of non-white players.
Yeah the region certainly produces coloured players nicely. The 'white' representation is dropping. Has been for a while now. Also a past of England internationals (Lamb, Trott, Kieswetter) and recent Kolpaks (Levi, van Zyl).

But if you look at the white players produced in the area - it is minimal - Puttick, Levi, van Zyl, Verreynne, Linde, Cohen (that isn't a lot considering how long ago Puttick debuted & Levi/van Zyl are 29/30 now.)

Also Western Province cricket just released their age group teams.

The announcement of the end-of-year age-group teams of Western Province are exciting, especially because of the presence of Makhaya Ntini’s son, Thando Ntini in the U19 A group and the inclusion of the world-class 18-year-old opener, Laura Wolvaardt, amongst the girls.
And don’t forget that Western Province recently produced the prodigious talent that is Michael Cohen, who made his first-class debut while only an 18-year-old swing bowler and nipped out 6-49 in his maiden appearance.

Wolvaardt, an U19 player of Western Province and a South African stalwart, was selected for the team of the tournament during the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup.

She was named as one of the openers of the global team in recognition of her 324 runs during the campaign in which the Momentum Proteas Women reached the semi-finals.

The matric learner and head girl of Parklands High School also hammered a career-high 149 for the senior Momentum Proteas women against Ireland.

Cohen’s performances, like that of Wolvaardt, is testimony to the type of players the pipeline structures of Western Province can produce.

The Cape champions were the recent recipients of the CSA Incentive Scorecard in two categories – the expert running of the Women’s Cricket program in 2015, HUBS and regional performance centres in 2016, and the WP Academy in 2017.

“There are two ways to measure the strength of age-group teams. One is if your teams feature in the final game of the tournament against the other strongest performer in all of the age group weeks.

“The previous year we had no teams competing in that final game, but we are aware of some shortfalls and have looked into it for 2017. The other objective is to see how many players progress into the South African age-group teams,” said Clinton du Preez, Cricket Services Manager of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA).

“We have also focused on our high-performance girls to ensure that we selected U13 and U16 age group girls who will contest in the regional tournaments at the end of the year,” Du Preez added.

“Two years ago, Michael was drafted into the South African U19 A team after representing the Cobras Cubs. After that, he played one semi-professional game for Western Province and produced a match-haul of 6-49 in his maiden first-class game.

“He signed a semi-professional contract and was included in the National Academy squad and the South African Invitational team to play Bangladesh,” said Du Preez about the impressive progress made by the left-arm swing bowler.

Ntini was selected for the SA U19 team while only 16 and is considered an exciting emerging all-rounder. He is arguably boasting greater talent with the blade than his famous father, Makhaya, who captured 390 test scalps as an athletic fast bowler.

Du Preez expressed his content with the selection of squads and said he is excited about the preparation for the national weeks.
U19 A: Umar Anthony, Josh Breed, Justin Broad, Daniel da Costa, Grant Martin, Sisonke Mazele, Daniel Moriarty, Mihlali Mpongwana, Thando Ntini, Riaz Paleker, Kyle Pluke, Siyanda Ngxangane, Karl Vermeulen;

U17 A: Jonathan Bird, Lehan Botha, Raees Carr, Matthew de Villiers, Gabriel Gad, Bonga Makaka, Imraan Philander, Siyabulela Plaatjie, Guy Sheena, Keane Solomons, Reece Thomas, Lwando Tywaku, Jordan Woolf;

U15 A: Salmaan Ajam, Kai Curran, Michael Levitt, Hlumani Msutu, Siviwe Nkonzombi. Zayd Noor, Reese Scheepers, Kutsala Shabangu, Aamir Shaik Abdul, Daniel Smith, Jared Southgate, Quinn van Oordt, Justin Wareley;

U13 A: Samuel Chemaly, Fayaad Daniels, Umayr Davids, Mogammad Zain Galant, Dewalt Grove, Jordan Jones, Jacques Jooste, Ross Martin, Bongile Mfunelwa, Meeka-Eel Prince, Siyabonga Venge, Liyema Waqu, Gysbert Wege;

DOLPHINS V LIONS in PMB

Vilas in line for Dolphins debut

Having drawn both of their opening Sunfoil Series fixtures so far in the campaign, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins will be bolstered by the arrival of new signing Dane Vilas for their upcoming Sunfoil Series clash with the bizhub Highveld Lions on Friday at the Pietermaritzburg Oval.

The talented wicketkeeper/batsman has joined the Hollywoodbets Dolphins following a successful season with English country side Lancashire where he helped his team finish the County Championship in second place behind Essex.

It was not only a strong season from the former Cape Cobras star from a team perspective, he also registered his highest individual first-class score when he notched up brilliant 244 against Hampshire.

The elements hampered the Dolphins' charge last week when they were on top of the defending four-day competition champions the VKB Knights at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead.

"We won the two bonus point battles against the defending champions last week which was very encouraging," coach Grant Morgan commented.

"The Lions are going to be a tough challenge with a leader like Stephen Cook, who lives and breathes Johannesburg and the Lions, and a strong all-round side that is talented across the board from their bowlers to their batters.

"They bat very deep, and it looks like young (Wiaan) Mulder is the final piece of their puzzle.

"With all of their bowling and batting options they become a really tough side to beat so it going to be another scrap and we know that we have to work exceedingly hard to beat them."

Despite every match so far in the Sunfoil Series ending in draws, Morgan believes that it is important that each and every ground in the country maintains its inherent character.

"People have been a bit scathing of the first two weeks of this competition. People want each game to go to the final over of the fourth day!

"I think the draws that we have seen are a reflection on some good cricket that has been played.

"We want to grounds to remain unique and we know that if Maritzburg maintains its unique aspects it will deteriorate as the game goes on.

"There will be a slight variability in bounce and turn and that is what Maritzburg can become if we play four days of cricket on it," he added.

Vilas' return is a timely one for the Dolphins as they lose SJ Erwee this weekend as he travels overseas for personal commitments and there is an injury cloud over last match’s centurion Cody Chetty.

The 32 year-old Vilas is no stranger to conditions in KwaZulu-Natal and is looking forward to representing the Dolphins.

"I do know what to expect and I have done quite well in KZN in the past so I feel that there is nothing to be concerned about going into this weekend," Vilas commented.

"There is always a bit of added pressure for a new player coming into a new side wanting to perform and get some big runs under the belt and contribute to the team as early as possible.

"I used to give some of the guys here quite a bit of stick behind the stumps so they will be giving me a bit back, but they making it so easy for me," he added.

The Dolphins currently sit in second place on the Sunfoil Series log behind the VKB Knights.

The match will start at 09:00 on Friday 6 October with free entrance for spectators to the Pietermaritzburg Oval.

DOLPHINS SQUAD:

COBRAS V KNIGHTS in Oudtshoorn

Good to see some pace back with Marchant in the Knight's squad. I bet he missed these Saffer wickets.

THE KNIGHTS INCLUDED PROTEAS DAVID MILLER AND MARCHANT DE LANGE IN THEIR SQUAD FOR THIS WEEKEND'S SUNFOIL SERIES MATCH AGAINST THE WSB CAPE COBRAS AT THE REC GROUND IN OUDTSHOORN.
THE SQUAD IS:
1. GRANT MOKOENA
2. KEEGAN PETERSEN
3. PITE VAN BILJON (CAPTAIN)
4. DAVID MILLER
5. RUDI SECOND (WK)
6. WERNER COETSEE
7. PATRICK KRUGER
8. MARCHANT DE LANGE
9. EDDIE LEIE
10. OTTNEIL BAARTMAN
11. MBULELO BUDAZA
12. KARABO MOGOTSI
13. CORNE DRY
MANAGEMENT :
NICKY BOJE – HEAD COACH
ALAN KRUGER – ASSISTANT COACH
MORNE CASTELYN – FITNESS TRAINER
KEAGAN RAFFERTY - PHYSIOTHERAPIST
Wow not so long ago the Physiotherapist was captain SA Schools/SA u19. Local boy who went to St Andrews Bloem. Good alternate career path for him to stay in the game.

No Cobras squad yet but debate.

The World Sports Betting Cape Cobras won’t be ditching their attacking brand of cricket against the defending Sunfoil Series-champions, the VKB Knights, when the two teams meet in a Sunfoil Series-clash at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn from Friday 6th October.

The WSB Cape Cobras will be without their strike bowler, Dane Paterson, in the match. The progress report on their inspirational captain, Dane Piedt, is positive.

He was struck on the forearm at St. George Park in Port Elizabeth by Anrich Nortjé but an X-ray-examination revealed no fracture and he is on course to wear the captain’s arm band again.

The top-order batsman Justin Ontong is nursing a finger injury, but is continuously receiving medical support from Shane Jabaar, and is up-beat about his chances to continue his dominant form with the blade against the Knights.

Ontong hammered 128 in the corresponding match in Bloemfontein against the Knights a few weeks ago.

The Bloemfontein-based team will be strengthened by the return of the menacing Marchant de Lange, a strike bowler who can use his bouncer to cause seriously bodily harm.

Otniel Baartman, who captured 14-56 for South Western Districts in the 2016/2017-season against KwaZulu-Natal, will return to his old stomping ground, wearing a VKB Knights-hat.

David Miller, swashbuckling middle-order batsman of the Knights, was not at a Bloemfontein-practice on Tuesday. There is still uncertainty surrounding his selection.

“Last season, the match that turned our fortunes around, was against the bizhub Highveld Lions at Outdshoorn where Wayne Parnell struck a century and we won through a belligerent approach.

“We have a positive mind-set about returning to the ground,” said Faiek Davids, the assistant coach of the WSB Cape Cobras.

Ashwell Prince, the coach, said he is pretty happy with the batting performance of the WSB Cape Cobras, as they have strung together 14 fifty-run partnerships and struck five tons in the first two four-day games of the season. But he is more critical of the bowling attack. Both Davids and Prince were at pains to emphasize the importance of bowlers assessing the conditions expertly and making adjustments accordingly. That means that the Cobras must build pressure more consistently and force the batsmen into fatal errors. Dayyaan Galiem, swing bowler of Western Province, might be given a first run for the Cape Cobras if Paterson is not released for franchise duty.

The Cobras also sport two superb additional spinners, GF Linde and Kyle Simmonds, at their disposal.

Prince said on Tuesday the selectors are prepared to look at South Western Districts, Boland and Western Province and select semi-professional players who have recently made an impression as the WSB Cape Cobras are in a transitional phase.

Prince hasn't been happy with the bowling. Has brought in Cohen & Simmonds into the squad.

The World Sports Betting Cape Cobras must be more clinical with bat, ball and as a fielding unit in order to utilize opportunities and transform potential match-changing moments into bonus point wins.

This was the frank assessment of the assistant coach, Faiek Davids.

He spoke in the build-up to the Sunfoil Series clash against the defending champions, the VKB Knights, at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn starting on Friday from 10:00.

The Cobras selectors picked the dynamic duo of Kyle Simmonds, a left-arm orthodox spinner, and the 19-year-old left-arm swing bowler Michael Cohen in an extended squad for the trip to Oudtshoorn.

Simmonds recently averaged 136.50 with the bat in the South African Emerging Tour of Zimbabwe and was the leading wicket-taker, grabbing 15 wickets. Cohen nabbed out six wickets. On his first-class debut, he finished with a match-haul of 6-49.

After two rounds of Sunfoil Series fixtures, the WSB Cape Cobras currently have 21.30 points. They are within touching distance of the table-topping VKB Knights, who boast 28.96 points.

During an impressive net session on Wednesday, the world-class cricketer and former test stalwart JP Duminy helped Ashwell Prince, the WSB Cape Cobras head coach, and Davids during the net session. He assisted with throw-downs while offering some pearls of wisdom to the WSB Cape Cobras’ batsmen.

Rory Kleinveldt, former South African test and One Day International star, took charge of the bowlers.

The South African bowling ace Vernon Philander was also at the nets to share his professional knowledge and experience.

Philander, man of the series against Australia last season, was sidelined for the Bangladesh series due to injury.

Stiaan van Zyl took full part in the net session on Wednesday after his return from the UK.

The stylish left-handed former South African top-order batsman struck 1023 runs for Sussex in 2017. It was his first county-season.

The top-order batsman Justin Ontong came through the batting session unscathed. That was despite nursing an injury to his right index finger which required the use of a plastic splint.

Ontong is confident of playing against the Knights.

He recently hammered a magnificent match-saving 128 against them. He subsequently struck a swashbuckling half-century against the Warriors.

Davids said the management team has addressed the batting with the top and middle order and has set high standards for them.

“We felt that scores of 400 or 450 are not good enough.

“We actually could have scored 600 or 650 (against the Warriors). We have addressed that with the players and they have accepted the challenge. Hundreds are not necessarily good enough. We need to convert those scores (into something more substantial).

“In terms of the bowling attack, there should not be excuses. It is about executing your skills and taking 20 wickets to win matches. Yes, we were bowling on flat tracks, but we created opportunities to possibly change match situations.

“We should be grabbing those opportunities,” he added.

Davids lamented the missed opportunities in the field in the first two games. Some catches that were not necessarily difficult, did not go to hand.

There was one occasion on which a Warriors player was caught behind off his first delivery, and admitted afterwards he was gone, but the fateful finger was not raised.

“We have to be more clinical,” Davids said.

“We have the personnel to win matches, and I’m not just talking about the squad of 13, but the full professional squad,” he added.

Nicky Bojé, the Knights coach, said 21 centuries have been struck in the first two matches which underlines the flatness of the tracks.

Although he feels upbeat about the batting in the first match against the WSB Cape Cobras, there is some room for improvement as a bowling unit.

“We had been without Duanne Olivier and Marchant de Lange, but Marchant is back for the game against the Cobras.

“If you want to win the competition, you require a couple of bowlers to take almost 40 wickets each.

“We are on top in terms of the log position, but if we can win one or two matches, it will create a substantial gap,” he added.

The Knights possess a strong batting line-up, bolstered by the presence of David Miller.

The Cobras, however, are equally impressive. They have a star batting line-up which is lengthened by the presence of the dynamic Kyle Verreynne.

The top-six have produced five centuries this season, and the team have completed two double-century stands and 12 other fifty-run partnerships.

The WSB Cape Cobras squad: Dane Piedt (capt), Michael Cohen, Zubayr Hamza, Simon Khomari, Pieter Malan, Aviwe Mgijima, Tshepo Moreki, Justin Ontong, Andrew Puttick, Kyle Simmonds, Jason Smith, Kyle Verreynne, Lizaad Williams.

Titans v Warriors in Benoni

No Birch for Warriors
No Kuhn for Titans
Two senior pros vital to a domestic system

Warriors coach Malibongwe Maketa has mixed feelings about the start his side has made to the Sunfoil Series season as they prepare to take on the Multiply Titans at Sahara Willowmoore Park in Benoni from Friday.

The men from the Eastern Cape, like the other five sides in the competition, have drawn both matches so far in 2017/18, meaning there is no outright leader in the competition thus far.

But Maketa’s men have enjoyed much better games than their two opposition to date – the bizhub Highveld Lions and WSB Cape Cobras – and the coach is hoping to build on that away to the much-fancied Titans.

“We’re pleased yes, but we’re also a bit disappointed that we haven’t been able to get over that line with at least one win,” he said. “In saying that, we have played good cricket so far in all eight days that we’ve had in the middle.

“So from that point of view, we’re really pleased with the way we’ve started the season.”

The Titans are traditionally one of the stronger franchises in South African cricket and Maketa is expecting them to pose the biggest challenge yet this season.

“They are a good team and we always look forward to playing against them,” he said. “The fact that we’re playing them away from home makes it even tougher, but an exciting challenge nonetheless. And we’re looking forward to it.”

The hosts are also a team that like to take the game to the opposition, which is something the Warriors are prepared for, especially after the start to the season where no team has won a game as yet.

Maketa added: “That’s how they like to play their cricket, they like to attack and it’s one of those games where you know you’re going to be tested.

“But for us, it’s about staying focussed and really making sure we’re spot on with our plans and execution, irrespective of what they do. It will be a good test for us.”

But Titans assistant coach Mandla Mashimbyi insisted that their approach to the game was the same as it was before they played the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the Lions.

“We play every game to win,” he said. “That’s the mindset and it won’t change for this game. As you would have witnessed in the past two weeks, we’ve been in good positions, so going forward we want to make sure we capitalise on those positions.”

The hosts have Standard Bank Proteas star AB de Villiers available for the match, while Tabraiz Shamsi is back after his one-game stint for the visitors.

Having lost the spinner, the Warriors have another slow bowler now available after Simon Harmer returned from playing county cricket in England. He is one of two Kolpak players available, along with Colin Ackermann.

Titans squad: Heinrich Klaasen (capt), Farhaan Behardien, Corbin Bosch, Henry Davids, AB de Villiers, Tony de Zorzi, Eldred Hawken, Rivaldo Moonsamy, Alfred Mothoa, Migael Pretorius, Malusi Siboto, Tabraiz Shamsi, Jonathan Vandiar, Shaun von Berg.

Warriors squad: Jon-Jon Smuts (capt), Colin Ackermann, Tladi Bokako, Gihahn Cloete, Clyde Fortuin, Simon Harmer, Sisanda Magala, Eddie Moore, Lesiba Ngoepe, Anrich Nortje, Jerry Nqolo, Lutho Sipamla, Yaseen Vallie.

What is the point of Nqolo? It's like a darker shade of Kelly Smuts... (Or Murray Creed, going back a bit..)

Hope Bokako gets another run though...

I used to think that but of late he is scoring more runs than Ngoepe. Obviously in a Warriors strongest line-up there is doubt about them.

The less said about Kelly Smuts the better. Not sure hoe he got a Global T20 Contract.

Bokako any good ? I'm hoping more on Sipamla to come through so that average joes like Walters and Gqamane aren't involved anymore.
