SA u19 captain Raynard van Tonder with a very good knock of 26 off 15 balls in the Africa T20 Final coming in at 6 which obviously not really his game. Looks a class player & like Breetzke ear-marked from young. School 1st teams at 14 - 3 years of Coke Week, SA Schools and SA u19 hundreds. Going to plan so far.

Think a lot of it comes down to being able to turn decent balls into 1s and they both have it. The shots and boundary hitting are obvious.

Gerald Coetzee ripping it up in the annual T20 Zim Tournament. St Andrews Bloem winning and he won player of the tournament. They looking after him due to growth with injuries. https://www.facebook.com/StJohnsCollegeZim/videos/765540380237457/

KZN Inland Africa Cup champions : Final, Africa T20 Cup at Kimberley, Sep 25 2017 | Match Summary | ESPNCricinfo

Erwee, Roelofsen, Nipper crucial with the bat. Mungroo looks to have a bit about him with the ball.

Good news for a small union. In truth the region is schooling better cricketers than KZN Coastal these days but they all end up in Durban in the end.
Watching that, Mungroo reminds me a bit of B McMillian... everything happens at the crease. Falls away a bit to much though.

SUNFOIL SERIES Round 2 starts tomorrow - 2 coastal venues. Doubt run-scoring will be as easy there.

Dolphins v Knights at Kingsmead
Titans v Lions at Super Sport Park
Warriors v Cobras at St George's

Knights will probably bring in van Biljon and Dry to replace de Bruyn and Olivier from the squad announced earlier.

Cobras built around character - Piedt

If the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras regularly get off to a flyer and establish more first innings’ leads in four-day games, they will be difficult to stop, according to their skipper, Dane Piedt.

The return of allrounder Jason Smith also makes this team a better-balanced unit for the Sunfoil Series clash against the Warriors at St. George’s Park in Port Elizabeth (starting on Thursday).

The tendency to play catch-up cricket has been a trait of the WSB Cape Cobras, and it is something the team is addressing in order to get their noses in front early in four-day games. If they do produce an early lead, they will be a more rampant force.

Speaking about their dismissal for a lowly 159 against the VKB Knights and how the team transformed their fortunes with a gritty performance from day two, Piedt said the WSB Cape Cobras are “built around character”.

The team showed little character on the first day and the coach, Ashwell Prince, expressed his dissatisfaction and anger about their display. They responded almost immediately and stood up to the challenges.

The current bowling attack is a young and inexperienced one and they must just find a way to capture 20 wickets in every match.

Smith has definitely picked up pace in the off-season and he will ensure it is a better-balanced bowling unit. Piedt said he thought Smith was a bit unlucky that he did not shave Wiaan Mulder for a position in the SA test squad (against Bangladesh).

“He is a bit of a maverick,” Piedt said while referring to Smith’s aggressive and fearless approach to batting. He said in this regard, Smith reminds one a bit of Quinton de Kock.

He was disappointed in his own batting performances for the SA A team, but the presence of Prince as coach and Faiek Davids as assistant coach will aid Smith in knuckling down and improving his shot selection at No 5, the skipper remarked.

Piedt said the absence of Vernon Philander and Wayne Parnell for the second match is almost a blessing in disguise because it forces the attack to be brutally honest about their own shortcomings and find a way to capture 20 wickets. “But we are moving in the right direction.”

Justin Ontong, who struck a magnificent 128 in the second innings in Bloemfontein, said the Cobras must learn as a batting unit.

“When we batted in the first innings, there were too many soft dismissals and at the wrong times,” he added.

Ontong said the collective reaction of the team will bolster their confidence ahead of the match against the Warriors.

Asked about his 128, one of the highlights of the WSB Cape Cobras’ heroic counter-offensive, Ontong said he knew they needed to bat for two days to save the match.

“So I had to reel in my natural instincts, but it helped to have a master batting with me in Hashim Amla,” added Ontong.

At the practice at PPC Newlands on Tuesday, quite a few senior players and the management team were excited about the performance by Kyle Verreynne, who mercilessly hooked and pulled the test fast bowler, Duanne Olivier, during his unbeaten 42 in Bloemfontein.

Piedt said one of the greatest characteristics of the new WSB Cape Cobras’ culture, is that players are given the confidence to walk out and express themselves.

WSB CAPE COBRAS SQUAD: Dane Piedt (capt) Dayyaan Galiem, Zubayr Hamza, Simon Khomari, Pieter Malan, Aviwe Mgijima, Tshepo Moreki, Justin Ontong, Dane Paterson, Andrew Puttick, Jason Smith, Kyle Verreynne, Lizaad Williams

Heinrich Klaasen will captain the Titans 4-day team in Markram's absence.

Must say I like the IXU range.

[Heinrich Klaasen’s considerable growth over the last 18 months has seen him go from a franchise rookie to the brink of the Proteas Test side and the highly-promising 26-year-old wicketkeeper/batsman will now captain the Multiply Titans for the first time in their Sunfoil Series match against the bizhub Highveld Lions at SuperSport Park from Thursday.

Heinrich Klaasen

The Titans began the four-day competition in much better fashion than previous campaigns, dominating the opening-round match against the Hollywoodbets Dolphins at Centurion, before the visitors produced a superbly-defiant last-day batting performance to force the draw.

But Klaasen said the Titans are determined to ensure they go one better against their neighbours this weekend and secure outright victory.

“The team definitely feels like we let one slip last week and we want to be a bit more consistent with the ball, we bowled a few too many shorter lengths against the Dolphins, so that’s something to improve on against the Lions,” Klaasen said.

With the Proteas being back in action and a well-deserved call-up for Aiden Markram, who captained the Titans last week, Klaasen, who was absent himself as he was playing for the SA Invitation XI against the touring Bangladesh, will be leading a team that could have half-a-dozen changes.

Opening batsmen Dean Elgar and Markram are both on national duty, opening up space for Heino Kuhn to return from injury and Andrea Agathegelou to make his Titans four-day debut. Faf du Plessis is off to captain the Proteas, along with Quinton de Kock, the wicketkeeper/batsman, and Morné Morkel will no doubt be playing a key role with the ball for the South Africans.

Meanwhile, Tabraiz Shamsi has joined the Warriors on a one-match loan, against the WBS Cape Cobras at St George's Park. But such is the depth in the Titans squad that the vacancies have in some ways created more options for the team. Depending on which way they decide to go, the Titans could field five specialist bowlers with ace leg-spinner Shaun von Berg, back after playing under Klaasen in the SA Invitation side, and one of Eldred Hawken, Migael Pretorius or Corbin Bosch joining last week’s pace trio of Malusi Siboto, Rowan Richards and Alfred Mothoa.

If Jonathan Vandiar comes into the starting XI, then the Titans could play seven frontline batsmen, with three seamers, Von Berg and the part-time spin of Henry Davids.

“There’ve been a couple of new, young guys drafted into the squad, so we’ll have to look at the pitch and decide which attack suits conditions best,” said Klaasen.

Klaasen is yet another product of the University of Pretoria side and the forceful middle-order batsman spent much of his time with the four-time Momentum National Club Championship winners under the captaincy of Markram and Theunis de Bruyn, who have each moved on to bigger things and leadership roles in senior franchise cricket.

But the leadership ability of the Pretoria-born, Menlopark-educated Klaasen has always been apparent and his turn to take over the Titans’ reins has now come.

“I do enjoy captaincy and it was good experience for me leading the national academy side in Sri Lanka in 2015. Each of the captains I’ve played under have taught me different things about leadership,” Klaasen said.

Multiply Titans squad to face bizhub Highveld Lions (from): Heino Kuhn, Andrea Agathegelou, Henry Davids, Jonathan Vandiar, Tony de Zorzi, Farhaan Behardien, Heinrich Klaasen, Shaun von Berg, Malusi Siboto, Rowan Richards, Alfred Mothoa, Migael Pretorius, Corbin Bosch, Eldred Hawken.

So Shamsi has gone to the Warriors for a 1-game loan for this round. See above.

Warriors batsman Eddie Moore is looking to ride his wave of form as the Warriors prepare to meet the Cobras in a Sunfoil Series fixture starting at St George’s Park tomorrow.

In the opening game of the season, against the Lions last week, Moore cracked a first innings 115.

It was the 24-year-old’s fifth first-class century but his first at franchise level.

Moore was thrilled with his early effort and will be looking to cash in.

“Last season, I scored a couple of 50s but did not get the big one. It was a relief to get the first one under the belt and against a decent bowling line- up,” Moore said.

Unfortunately, Moore will be without opening partner David White, who scored 94 in a massive stand with Moore against the Lions .

“David [White] and myself had really good plans against Kagiso Rabada and we managed to not give him anything in the game,” Moore said.

“Last season, I opened with four different players, and our first game back we put on 179 partnership for the first wicket.

“It would have been good to have that partnership going through the season. Unfortunately, he [White] got injured.”

Now, into his second full season with the Warriors, Moore believes he is settling into his role.

“I’m starting to mature. I’m really feeling positive,” he said.

“I worked pretty hard off-season on some technical stuff and the coaches helped me with some of the mental side.”

Looks like 18 year-old Breetzke could debut for the Warriors with no White (getting injured last game) & the Kolpak players.

Warriors coach Malibongwe Maketa is hoping to build on the encouraging start they made to the season last weekend when they host the WSB Cape Cobras in round two of the Sunfoil Series at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth starting from Thursday.

The men from the Eastern Cape were held to a draw by the bizhub Highveld Lions in Johannesburg, a match they dominated for long periods, before the sides could not be separated on the final day.

“It was a great start for us in terms of the positives, especially on what we produced last season,” Maketa said. “We’ve been calling out for guys to score hundreds and they did that in Jo’burg.

“I was also pleased with the bowlers, who delivered in partnerships which helped us create pressure.

“So it was great to see, it was very encouraging and now we’ll hope to come back home and build on that against the Cobras.”

There were centuries from Eddie Moore and new captain Jon-Jon Smuts, while David White came close to making three figures. The likes of Lesiba Ngoepe, Gihahn Cloete, Sisanda Magala, Andrew Birch and Anrich Nortje also impressed.

Maketa hoped these players would be able to produce another strong showing against their Cape opponents.

“We always enjoy the challenge of playing against a strong franchise like the Cobras and it will be great if we can go on and deliver against them,” he added. “A lot of people will judge us by the way we perform against them and that is exciting for us.”

Tabraiz Shamsi joined the Warriors on loan from the Titans this week and is available for selection, while South Africa Under-19 star Matthew Breetzke is also in the squad.

WARRIORS SQUAD: Andrew Birch, Tladi Bokako, Gihahn Cloete, Clyde Fortuin, Matthew Breetzke, Sisanda Magala, Eddie Moore, Lesiba Ngoepe, Anrich Nortje, Jerry Nqolo, Lutho Sipamla, Tabraiz Shamsi, Jon-Jon Smuts (capt), Yaseen Vallie.

Dolphins squad. Africa Cup seems to have worked in Kerwin Mungroo's favour.

Hollywoodbets Dolphins coach Grant Morgan is expecting another tough early-season Sunfoil Series assignment for his team when they come up against reigning champions the VKB Knights at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban from Thursday.

The host secured a credible draw against the Multiply Titans in their opening match of the campaign last week, a match they looked likely to lose after the opening three days.

Morgan wants to take the positives from the draw in Centurion into their first home game of the season.

“We are really proud of what we achieved on the last day, especially from 27 for three,” he said. “I think what we have to address is why 27 for three? Why 317 in the first innings? And we know why.

“Good partnerships and good contributions, but a lack of a big partnership and an individual score in the first innings and then a cluster of wickets in the second innings. So those are the things we’ll hope to avoid against the Knights.”

The Titans ended runners-up last season have been one of the strongest teams in the competition during recent seasons. Morgan believes it is better to be playing the top sides early in the campaign.

“It’s good to be playing the two teams that were fighting it out for the title last year in our first two games this year,” he added.

“We see it as a big challenge to play the two championship teams up front because it really tests us and gives us an opportunity to see where we’re at.

“We respect the Knights, like we respected the Titans last week and we’re expecting a tough game again at Kingsmead.”

Three players that were part of the Hollywoodbets KwaZulu-Natal Inland Africa T20 Cup-winning team at the weekend are in the Dolphins squad - Sarel Erwee, Athi Maposa and Kerwin Mungroo. Andile Phehlukwayo and Keshav Maharaj are unavailable due to their Standard Bank Proteas commitments.

Knights coach Nicky Boje was happy with the way the champions began the campaign despite failing to get over the line against the Cobras in Bloemfontein.

“I'm very pleased with the performances of the players in the first game, there were a lot of positives to take out of it,” he said. “The wicket did get quite flat and it was hard work, but the guys stuck to it and we were the team on top for most of the game.”

Looking ahead to the challenge the Dolphins will pose, the Knights boss conceded it will be tough work as always against the Durbanites.

“They’re always a tough side to play against. They’ve got some very good individuals and they’re playing well as a team, so it’s going to be a tough game and we’re looking forward to it,” he added.

Pite van Biljon will lead the Knights this week after Theunis de Bruyn reported for national duty. Also out for the same reason is Duanne Olivier.

HOLLYWOODBETS DOLPHINS SQUAD: Sarel Erwee, Senuran Muthusamy, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Cody Chetty, Sibonelo Makhanya, Khayelihle Zondo (capt), Morne van Wyk, Robert Frylinck, Calvin Savage, Mthokozisi Shezi, Prenelan Subrayen, Athi Maposa, Kerwin Mungroo.

In the short interview with him, he said he has been at university, not played many FC games, and also been working with Ngam during this last off-season. Hope he turns out good, we need all the bowling stock we can with Kolpak and injuries giving us a hard time.

Yeah. We've had multiple players taken from us due to injury to senior internationals (Steyn, Philander, Morris), Kolpaks pushing not available (Abbott, de Lange, Viljoen) or young talented fast bowlers like Ngidi, Dupavillon, Zuma getting injured. So agree the more names in the hat the better.

26-28 year-olds like Paterson, Dala, B.Hendricks or Magala aren't international level otherwise they wouldn't keep going back to Parnell. Limited overs stuff maybe at this stage. Younger Olivier and Rabada are in the mix ahead of them.

Bowlers like Engelbrecht and Williams have never been my cup of tea. They got smashed for 100+ at over 6 RPO last week. Corne Dry is still bowling 125-128 (that won't get you anywhere)

This season it will be important for Ngidi, Dupavillon to get fit and get bowling. Next level to me are :

Nortje - I think he looks a work horse. Will keep running in hitting the deck but speeds seem early 130s are high 130s so need to improve consistency and stamina there.
M.Pretorius - Looks like 132-134 bounce bowler. But think he can get quicker but always wearing and elbow strap.
C.Bosch - Needs to actually start producing. After leaving for Australia and coming back needs to prove a few people wrong. Impressed with his pace though after being military medium at u19 WC.
Cohen & Sipamla. Both still 19. But plenty to work with. Both in the mix and getting opportunities early.

Mungroo and Hawken are interesting one's. Both sort of come from no where in terms of the system. The bigger problem for Hawken is injuries too and 28 years old as opposed to Mungroo.

Liked Piedt's words on Verreynne.

“He is a great little player. He is very boisterous in the way he walks around. He is a relaxed type of character. He has come from a great school like Wynberg. They really blood good young cricketers there,”

“He has fitted in well, and I know what’s like to be a young player walking into a team environment where it is awkward and you don’t really feel backed. That’s not a pleasant experience.

“We have therefore given all the young guys the opportunity to walk into the dressingroom and really express themselves off and on the field. We have a great vibe…

“Sometimes the banter goes too far, but we have a great vibe in the dressingroom.”
