Smith, AB and Amla all averaged low to mid 40s at home a few years ago. Don't know how much that's changed now.
Yeah one thing I noticed was that most of the South African batsmen tended to have better away records than home ones. Under-rated?

Is it really though?

55.88 > 55.23

edit: I'm guessing G Smith's is actually lower and that was a typo? Otherwise he'd be like 5th on the list
No, you're just confusing AB with ABDV. Easy mistake to make when you're unable to count to 4.

Ken Barrington has the best away average after Bradman - 69.18.

However, Mohinder Amarnath shows the biggest ever improvement when touring.
Home average = 30.44
Away average = 51.86
Difference = 21.42

Just behind Amarnath is Ken Barrington again.
Home average = 50.71
Away average = 69.18
Difference = 18.47

The differences between home and away averages is pretty interesting, but in terms of rating a player in away performances, the important bit is surely just how well they did overseas (with the usual considerations for era, opposition etc), not how it compares to their home record?

Allan Border is so great that when I get to 11,174 steps on my Fitbit, I refuse to walk further.

Hammond played the same 3 ashes series in Aus btwn the wars as Bradman. England won 2 of them comfortably and came within a delayed declaration of winning all 3. One of the reasons I'd guess, was Hammond's ability to nullify Bradman's contribution across all 3 series with his average of 75 just shading Bradman's 72.

Any differences might be because I included neutral venues instead of just away venues.

Wasn't Hammond a bit of a minnow basher? I have no idea obviously but i'm certain i've heard something like that somewhere.

He dominated in NZ on a Voges vs West Indies scale but the majority of his matches were against Aus so it doesn't affect his stats much.
